Music at the UCs

Granted that my family had the money, I would love to be able to go to a college/university with a high-end music program, like USC’s Thornton College of Music (hope I’m not offending any Bruins, here). However, my father insists that I attend a UC for my undergrad.

My basic question is, 1. would it be advisable to study music at a UC, and if so, 2. which UC has the best music program?

Oh yea, emphasis in violin and/or music education/pedagogy

Help?

i would argue USC Music is overpriced and less prestigiosu than juliard or coburn in LA.

any UC should be great for music!! good luck~

Lol, I was hoping for a bit more specific response than "any UC should be great for music".

Thanks for the input, though :D

hey spongefob

I KNOW UCLA has a great music program. Im not even sure some other UCs even have them. Can't go wrong with UCLA man. The same for USC if you can afford it.

GL on your search for the music school of choice!

Spongefob, what do you want to study..Music is a broad area...yodelling, violin, jazz, classical, guitar? Ethnomusicology? You got to tell us what key your in.

Oh, I play violin and am looking to go into music education.

UCLA, UCSB & UCI have programs where you must audition. Many of the staff teach at all three schools. Check all the UC websites. I am a USC grad & I was very impressed with UCLA and their music program. Sorry I am a trumpet mom and don't know much about violin. Son is at Univ of Redlands and they are known for merit aid.

ASU has a great program for music-if you are a National Merit Finalist you get full tuition + $$. OOS students need to keep a 3.5 gpa.

http://music.ucdavis.edu/performance/auditions.htm for UC Davis audition information..They have the new Mondavi performing Arts Center. I had a chance to see the UCLA practice rooms and they were very nice...If you are thinking about being a music teacher in California, it would be smart to get into a credential program here. Look at the various programs, spend a dime and call professors and departments...find out where you would fit best.

My girlfriend is a 3rd year music major (piano performance) at UCSB who came from Beijing's music conversatory. I come from a music background myself and was even taught by a UCSB grad for 9 years on the piano. I've been to a bit of performances here, and I can say that each one i've been to has been wonderful (except I don't have a taste for "eccentric" contemporary music.)

Yo-Yo Ma guest taught a master class here a couple of years back.

The community is a bit small so that you know most of the music majors.
