Music at Vassar

I am a drummer interested mainly in jazz, mostly in small combos. I was wondering how the music department is, and how seriously people take music at Vassar. What is the jazz scene like? Are there devoted and advanced players continuing their learning at Vassar? What about the non-curriculum music scene?

Any comments would be great!

music in general is great. This was sent to me today actually: "If you have not had a chance to do so, we wish to encourage you to join us for an unprecedented evening of Music from Vassar, with performances by the Vassar College Choir, Madrigal Singers, Opera Workshop, Orchestra and Women's Chorus in New York at St. Bartholomew's Church on Monday, May 12th.

The invitation with details for the evening, a downloadable registration form, and online registration are all available at the Vassar College Regional Programs website.

The deadline for registration has been extended to May 9th. We hope that you are able to join us

Have no idea if you live near NYC but it would give you a chance to meet Vassar musicians. There is a beautiful music building with loads of practice rooms, a separate music library and lots of independent groups. Not sure about the jazz scene. Hope that helps.

The music scene at Vassar, as a whole, is excellent. Although I haven't taken classes in it, I believe the Department is quite good (their website is Home - Music Department - Vassar College) and there are definitely plenty of students who are serious about studying music. The school also offers a variety of instrumental lessons, so if you're not interested in taking general music classes, but rather in continuing your study of one particular instrument (or, sometimes, in picking up a new one), that's available as well.

There are also a large variety of extracurricular musical groups and bands on-campus. I don't know how many student-run jazz bands there are (although I know of at least a couple), but know for sure that there is a very impressive "official" campus Jazz Band. For more information about this particular group see: Jazz Ensemble & Combos - Music Department - Vassar College.
