My son is strongly considering Wash U. We visited this spring, and he loved the campus and the people. His one concern was the apparent lack of performance opportunities in a music program. He would not be a music major, but likely a minor, and playing in marching, concert and jazz bands is something he wants to continue.

Anybody have more information on this. To be honest, folks at the visit were a little closed mouth about it, which was an additional concern.

Thanks.

I don't know a whole lot about music programs at any school, but I do know that WashU has one of the greatest performers of any kind of music, Ustad (Master) Imrat Khan, on their faculty.

He teaches the bass sitar also known as the surbahar and is a pleasure to listen to... descending from like 5-7 generations of musicians and the world master of his instrument.

I plan on taking a class with him just 'cuz... Makes me think their program can't be bad.. :)

Son is going to be a junior, and he plays the viola. He takes private lessons (3 credit @ weekly hour lesson), and he plays in a quartet (1 credit). He also participates in the chamber orchestra. He is in another quartet that plays on and off campus for money. He makes $50 per hour for regular gigs, and $75 per hour for weddings. Not bad for a student! He is not majoring or minoring in music, but music plays a big part in his life.

Thanks missmolly, sounds a lot like what my son plans. He plays baritone/euphonium, so will be looking for band/brass ensemble/orchestra opportunities.

Wash U is a wonderful college!!! I hope your son chooses to go there. By the way, if you go to the Washington Universityin St Louis website, then go to the music department site--The site is quite informative. Maybe son should call or email the music department if he has any questions about the programs there. Good luck.
