Hi! Class of 2013 here~ I’d like some insight on how music impacted your college application process. I play the clarinet. Rather well, actually. so I’m considering a music minor or double major (sorry music, but science is pretty cool too!) If you submitted a recording as an art supplement, did you think it helped your app and chances? Did you record a concerto? All the movements or just the first? Or did you submit “two contrasting pieces of no longer than ten minutes” like most places suggest? PMs are welcome and thank you!
Did not submit a recording but I will say that I wrote one of my essays on how music has affected me throughout my life (it was a UC essay) and I firmly believe it helped me greatly in getting in.
P.S. I play the clarinet too! YAY
Edit: A word of advice on the arts supplement, colleges tell you to only submit it if it adds a significant contribution to your app, so they don’t want you simply proving you can play the clarinet. Therefore, it’s reasonable to assume that they don’t want to listen to every clarinet player submitting a 10 minute concerto. I’d recommend only submitting as much as you think is needed to exemplify your skills as a clarinetist, for the sake of you’re already adding extra work for the reader of your app.
Thanks for the reply! I’m not an average clarinetist and have the state level achievements and things to prove it. I think the arts dept. listens to the tape so the app reader might just be told that I’m a musician they’d like to have or not. Still looking for anyone who did submit a supplement though!
