MUSIC & Brown Students

Rather, prospective Brown students. Although current ones are welcome to join!

Okay, let’s assume we’re all gonna get in. XD We’re in this together!

So, let’s find concert buddies! (I know that there’s at least one venue nearby – my friends and I walked from the campus to Providence to see Spoon play, and it was a 15-ish minute, scenic walk.)

I know lotsa people say they listen to “everything,” and mmm I guess I haven’t heard EVERY GENRE IN THE WORLD but I like a looot of stuff and I’m open to a lot. I like everything from death metal to alternative to opera to rap to techno to hardcore… and my favorite thing EVER is funky combinations of the things I like. (Opera death metal? Check, Tristania. Hardcore-death-metal-rap-techno? Check, The Electric Bloodbath.)

My absolute favs by genre. We’re not allowed to post YouTube links but we can provide… hmm… things to search for on YT that might yield videos:

**Metal/B: Opeth (Ghost of Perdition), Agalloch (…And the Great Cold Death of the Earth), Dream Theater (lolz) (Fatal Tragedy), Pain of Salvation (Iter Impius)
**Alternative/mainstream /B: The Dresden Dolls (Backstabber), Death Cab for Cutie (I Will Possess Your Heart), The Dear Hunter (Red Hands), The Postal Service (Nothing Better)
Singer/songwriter: Damien Rice (9 Crimes, Rootless Tree [couldn’t pick one!]), Jeff Buckley (Hallelujah)
Hardcore/post-hardcore: Thrice (For Miles), Between the Buried and Me (okay, they went more prog/DM, but they’ve still got some elements of hardcore) (Sun of Nothing), Battle of Mice (Sleep and Dream)
Techno/trance: Basshunter (I Can Walk On Water, I Can Fly)

So yeah, I’ll stop. Post your favorites; connect with like-minded Brown wannabes; discover new stuff? We can plan imaginary concerts that we’ll attend, lol.

/goes back to last-second prepping for SAT IIs

My faaaavorite bands/artists are:

Motion City Soundtrack (<3)
Death Cab for Cutie
Mat Kearney
The Decemberists
Damien Rice
The Feeling
The Verve Pipe
Margot and the Nuclear So and So's
The Fray
The Beatles
Simon and Garfunkel
James Taylor
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

Yay, nice list! I've never heard of The Feeling or Margot et. al; I'll check them out on YouTube. (:

We should see DCFC together at Brown! Haha, DCFC (w/ Shins!) was my second favorite concert ever... which surprises people who are used to seeing me in, like, Megadeth and Cannibal Corpse shirts. Lol.

And Damien Rice... I need to see him before I die. Too bad Lisa lefttt... :/ but he is frickin' FANTASTIC.

I like the limited Decemberists I've heard... same with MTC. I thought The Fray's album was solid, too, and I didn't expect to like it!

And ahhhh, The Verve Pipe does 'The Freshmen'!!!! That's one of my all-time favorite songs!!!! '90s alternative at its best.

YES '90s alternative just defeats all over the music, haha. The Freshman is like....ghhhhh. I adore that song.

I just saw The Decemberists in Baltimore last month and they were fantaaaastic. I've never seen Death Cab, but I'd love to! I've seen Motion City 3 times, Margot once, The Feeling twice, The Fray twice, Mat Kearney once. I am a concert junkie :)

Poseur, good call making this thread.
I have different tastes than you two but here's my list in no particular order

Does one have to be the Class of '13 to get in on this?

Nope.
And anyone here a fan of Girl Talk or Norwegian Recycling?

itsgametime--I LOVE Jack Johnson and Dispatch. I actually aaaaalmost put Dispatch on my list.

And I love the Kaiser Chiefs, too--they were my first concert!

itsgametime, your list is all over the place! And omg, U2 is like... the most prolific, amazing band ever. I even like their new stuff! Immortal Technique is excellent too. I've heard of Girl Talk and a few of my friends went to see them a few months ago, but I dunno any of their stuff.

MM, aww, you're a senior? D: I wanted to meet you, lolz. I looove GY!BE and King Crimson (ITCotCK = best album of the '60s?! I believe so) and Explosions in the Sky. And Porcupine Tree ahhh why didn't I mention them?! Definitely in my top 10. Plus of course no human can dislike Pink Floyd... although I like the Gilmour-era stuff (The Division Bell, for example) more the the Waters stuff (The Wall.)

I have a very eclectic movie taste, but I don't like everything. My favorite bands would probably be:

The Decemberists
Green Day
Jason Mraz
Motion City Soundtrack
Muse
My Chemical Romance

Solid list... I looove Muse and Regina Spektor.
