Providence has some pretty good concerts. Ther the Dunkin Donuts center which has a lot of big name but then there's a lot of smaller venues with local/lesser known artists. And not too far away there's Mohegan sun and Fooxwoods which have lots of big concerts and then of course there's boston less than an hour away!

Lupos, The Living Room, Club Hell, Dunk Donuts, Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods, and of course, all the Boston stuff.

Sufjan Stevens is a good call.

Only like Third Eye Blind's first album is a failure.

Shady- your taste seems closest to mine. Here I go:

Third Eye Blind
Coldplay (All albums except viva la vida)
Death Cab
Gavin Degraw (mostly first album, a few from most recent)
goo goo dolls
guns n' roses
josh groban
sufjan stevens
metallica
beethoven

and others.

sunemp we have an almost identical taste in music. Sufjan Stevens is hands down the best artist I've ever heard.

Hee, I have so much trouble answering this question because my taste in music is so damn inconsistent. But scrolling down my iTunes library, here's some of my faaavorites:

I just added 127 songs on my ipod because of this thread. Poseur, I'm gonna give death metal a try; it's one of the only genres I've never really been exposed to.

Hey, Poseur, you mentioned "folk metal"-- check out Orphaned Land. Israeli Oriental metal band. Some pretty sweet Middle Eastern instrumentation/tonality in an operatic/prog metal act.

My favorite music is pretty weird. Off the top of my head:

Little Milton, Aesop Rock, The Smiths, Damien Rice, John Lee Hooker, Pete Greenwood, Iggy Pop/The Stooges... and a lot more, but it's probably only marginally interesting to read what music I like.

Seriously, though, download:

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
I Can't Quit You Baby
Vicar in a Tutu

And holy crap, itsgametime--

I LOVE GIRL TALK.

The best concert I've ever been to was Yo La Tengo, last year. It was at the Birchmere and filled with aging hipsters and so ironically hilarious. I love YLT for still playing/embracing their fanbase.

YLT played with Mission of Burma and The Flaming Lips at spring weekend two years ago.

Ahhhhh. This makes me want to get in more :(. Everyone listens to such great stuff!!

Phi6: hi :)

This is just a very, very tiny cross section of the more popular musical acts I listen to. I listen to unhealthy amounts of music, though not at unhealthy levels thanks to the super spiffy $200 IEMs I've invested in. Yes I am an audiophile. 15,000 songs and counting. And if any of you know at least 12 of these bands, I swear we'll be best friends at Brown. And if you listen to Elliott Smith more than the casual listener we'll be BFFs seriously! :)

haha I'm an Elliott Smith fan and I rock to way more than 12 in your list; you hit so many of my tops in that list

Typical cats!!!!!!!

Obstinate, I loooooooooove

Belle and Sebastian
The Beatles
Oasis (<333333)
Coldplay
Sufjan Stevens
Stars (OMG LOVE)
Ambulance Ltd
Nirvana
Iron & Wine
Yo La Tengo
The Shins
Pink Floyd

friends?

We should tally the bands/ artists that are listed the most just for fun :)

:) Can I just like skip the next few years of my life and totally rock out with you all?

And Shady Lane, no Pavement-likey? Or did I somehow miss out Pavement!?!?!? Oh no!!

Who can't love the adorable quirky fun-distorted-rock that is Pavement?

And any of Montreal fans? I saw them live a few weeks ago. I've gotta say, that is one of the craziest concerts I've ever seen. There are very few opportunities where one can watch a man change costume a million times, then strip nearly completely naked. Haha. They painted him with red paint!

Anyone else have last.fm? Here's mine, although it kinda sucks since I don't listen to music on the comp much anymore (I use my iHome hehehe): poseurlol's profile at last.fm

Modestmelody, I'm on Orphaned Land's myspace right now and I LOVEEE it. I love bands with growling and clean vocals that can pull them both off. :D And omg the Middle Eastern influence is frickin' awesome. Thanks for the recommendation!
