I was just curious as to know if Brown’s music department is worth looking into. I have looked at numerous schools, and at this point only satisfied with cmu. But, I still want to know how Brown’s music department.

It's definitely worth looking into... what do you want to know?

here's a good place to start looking into it. up to you to decide whether or not clicking the link is worth it.

http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Music/

apparently >900 applicants to the college submitted music portfolios to the department this year. i'd estimate ~50 per class concentrate in music, so it's fairly competitive.

Wow, I had no idea it was that competitive. (But I guess it figures haha). I was looking into music like vocal performance. I actually checked on Brown's music department site but I couldn't find anything on vocal performance. I'm assuming that means Brown doesn't teach towards vocal performance? But, then again, my comp. was screwey that day so I have no idea.

I'm in chorus, which is fabulous -- it's offered by the music department for credit, not as an extracurricular. Also, there's AMP (applied music program) where you can do voice lessons for credit. You can do this in conjunction with a music concentration, or independently.

The music department doesn't focus on performance in general -- there's no music concentration just for performance. However, there's a LOT of vocal music stuff that goes on here.

Really? I thought there was like "piano" or "voice" that you could major in--Hmm...that's certainly a dissapointment lol, but i won't totally put it aside.

Jeremy,

none of the ivies offer any sort of performance degree. You can major in music but its mostly a general music degree- usually reserved for people interested in theory or composition.

Nonetheless, since these places are PACKED with music superstars who do not neccessarily want to go to conservatory, there are usually plenty of performance opportunities, including student runned music organizations.

there's an article from a recent Brown Magazine about students who chose Brown over conservatories
