Music Ed - Choral summer programs

S thinks he'd like to be a HS choral director. Northwestern has a very expensive and long summer program. Are there any others that you know of?

PS - Off topic: He was cast as Jean Valjean yesterday for his HS show. There's a lot of musical talent in TN -- it's going to be a great production. :)

Mary, I have no specific insight on vocal summer programs, but there is info in these past threads:

I’m not sure summer programs geared toward HS kids get into the conducting/music ed area all that much.

In your neck of the woods, Appalachia State U in Boone, NC has a 6-week program called Cannon Music Camp. Your son would be working with the full-time ASU music educators, and ASU has a well-respected Music Ed component during the school year. Their vocal instructors also have a good reputation for training young singers, with a sincere, “no drama” commitment level.

If a child of mine wanted to go into Music Ed, someone I’d want them to learn under would be Judith Willoughby at Oklahoma City University – such a dynamic presence, into the kids and into the music. We visited last April, and we happen to be too NorthEast for OkCU to be a comfortable fit for our D … but Willoughby left us mightily impressed. They do have a vocal performance summer program, and tend to use that as a “pre-screen” for fall applicants. But definitely visit before you commit – if OKCU turns out not to be a good fit for a kid, I would think it would be a pretty miserable place to be.

Further afield up to NJ, Westminster Choir College has a summer program – and as their name says, it’s all about vocals and choirs and choruses.

Taking VicAria’s comment about a music ed aspect a bit further:

I may be wrong, but I’ve yet to find anything in a high school age geared program that encompasses music ed in a summer music participatory performance program. I doubt you’re going to find a program that covers any teaching technique or academic overview aspect of music ed, particularly for the pre college level.

If the Northwestern program the OP mentions includes a music ed aspect, I’d urge her to post a link, as it may well be of interest to a number of people.

There are summer courses and workshops covering numerous aspects of the music ed profession offered at a number of colleges and universities that have noted music ed departments, but these are geared to masters level grad students, professional educators and an occasional music ed undergrad candidate.

These programs tend to move at a fast pace, as do most summer for credit/professional development classes and workshops, and assume a working basic knowledge of rudimentary educational philosophies, psychology, and applied techniques, both general and music specific.

Here’s the Northwestern Music Education and Conducting summer program. It’s part of their National High School Music Institute.
Here’s the main page for the institute. They have all sorts of programs.
I have plowed through many of the CC camp threads and searched many of the linked programs. I’ve not seen any other music ed programs for HS students.

S attended Governor’s School last summer. He has worked with good and bad conductors over the years and in his mind he would be a great one. LOL

Does anyone know about the Canon Music Camp at Appalachian State University. This camps not only offers scholarships with regional auditions in my state but also has a relatively low tuition to begin with.

Any feedback on the program for voice and/or piano? I know it is possible to take lessons for two instruments, but can I take classes for more than one instrument? Thank you in advance!

That is, does anyone know anything about the Canon Music Camp that VicAria has not mentioned? I missed her comment originally. Thank you, VicAria.

I can’t recommend Vocal Institute at Westminster Choir College enough. My D did the program twice. She had a great time, met kids she’s still in touch with, and learned a lot.
