My D (viola, music ed) has been accepted by fredonia, potsdam, univeristy of delaware, susquehanna university, wait listed at ithaca (her fav). so now she is pretty much deciding between SUNY fredonia, univ of delaware, and susquehanna univ. mom standing by and not wanting to say too much during this time. the better program-in my opinion just happens to be in a less desirable place but i'm fighting with how much to say at this point.
Any comments about University of Delaware music/strings/mus ed? How does a school that is known for it's music program (fredonia) compare to music program within a large university?
we'd appreciate and comments and anyone who has any info about music ed at UD

car, congrats to your daughter.

Ithaca and Potsdam/Crane stand out as the more recognized names for music ed, but Susquehanna and U Delaware both have fine programs. SUNY Fredonia is also a very good program, and appears to be “toss-up” against Potsdam for many.

There’s a set of questions to think about here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/891462-questions-after-acceptance.html

For music ed majors, I’d also consider
-the state where she plans to teach, as there may be differences (usually minor and easily obtained/corrected) between licensure requirements
-placement rates of grads after graduation, and if possible % of music ed grads still teaching five and ten years down the road
-differences between lesson policies for music ed versus perf majors
-how soon do the students actually get into the meat of the program, particularly actual
classroom observation and practicums
-for string students, sometimes the presence of a String Project program is important
-the student teaching experience… how distant are the assignments? Will she need to secure alternate housing that semester or need to have her own vehicle to make it practical.

All things being equal, often it is a case of where you end up just “feels” right.

Son had peers both at Ithaca and Potsdam in strings, both were very happy with their time at each, both had secured employment prior to graduation.

Use the final decision master threads to identify students currently at the schools. I would recommend pm contact directly, or search for some past posts under the appropriate user names. If you need assistance, I can point you to the threads.

Good luck.

I would presume NY is the home state so UD may be much more expensive although a very good school, but maybe not worth the cost difference although Ithica would be the most expensive if she came off the wait list. When my D was applying to UD I seem to remember a two semester requirement for Music Ed students to be in the Marching Band (which is a great band). Not sure if that would apply to viola (best check their web site) but if it does then that is a lot of time eaten up during two fall semesters and a one week camp prior to school. Not sure if the SUNYs have the same kind of requirement but that is the kind of fine detail for your D to consider before making a choice.

car, some more about Susquehanna in BassDad’s post #3 in the thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/895233-input-ds-decision-music-ed.html

violadad,
thanks so much for the input. well, after such a long process, my daughter has decided to go to SUNY Fredonia. She spent some time there and loved the prof and the viola studio members were wonderful to her. I think she would rather have been at UDel (b/c weather is much better and closer to Long Island!), but the larger viola studio and the concentration of music ed majors at Fredonia drew her there. She didn’t have a concrete reason for choosing Fredonia over Crane. Like you said - she just had a good feeling about Fredonia. Parent to parent - now that this part is over it is almost a letdown as much as it is a relief. I think it was the best choice and i know some of her peers that didn’t get in to the SUNY’s for music so i know she feels lucky having been chosen. it is just that it has been such a long road and now another one begins! Thank you again for your help.

Congratulations !! My son is at Crane and I took my daughter (HS Junior) to Fredonia a couple weeks ago to visit and meet the Flute profs. It seems to be a great school and I would have no problem if that’s where my daughter chose to go(except that the drive to visit both and get them to and from school will definitely suck). My son loves Crane so I would be happy with her there as well (and the drive will be easier).
