Hi all,
I am a high school sophomore and I am very interested in either pursuing a career in either music education (in a choral setting) or music therapy. I have been studying music since I was 6 years old, and while music education has always interested me, music therapy also seems like a field I would like, given my interest in psychology.
I was a student conductor last year, so I know that the day in the life of a choral director is. Can anyone out there tell me what a music therapist does? The descriptions I have found online are vague.
Also, I was wondering if I can get my undergrad in music ed and still get my master’s in music therapy?
Thanks so much
To get accepted in a MM Music Therapy program you need a undergraduate degree in music (and music ed would count). My D has a friend who did that.
As for what a music therapist does, I will have to let others answer. I don’t know enough about it.
bridgenail, do you happen to know if the program that your D’s friend was accepted to is accredited by AMTA? I know it has to be in order to be licensed.
Why not call the AMTA and have them give you some names of music therapists in your area so that you can find out what a music therapist does and what the outlook is for work is?
No I don’t. My knowledge of music therapy is limited to the one friend who went into music therapy. Sorry.
