Music ed vs performance

Oberlin’s website seems not to be 100% at the moment? It seems like they’re rolling stuff out yet possibly? I had a hard time finding info on there over the weekend.

The link below provides the details of Oberlin’s Music Education Program:

@musicwind Yes, that’s what I found when I searched music ed— but the application deadline is January 2017–not 2018. So I don’t think that page is current. Music ed is NOT listed as a current (graduate) program when you search the Music Conservatory.

UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell both have very good music programs. I am not sure about jazz specifically. At one point I had a guitar teacher who started out at Berkelee, but ran out of money and had to transfer to UMass Lowell. On the most part his credits did not transfer so Berkelee turned out for him to be an expensive mistake – make sure if you go there that you won’t run out of money before 4 years is up.

There are some schools in Canada with both very good music and very good education programs and reasonable prices (comparable to the UMass’ for Massachusetts residents), but education might be something best studied closer to where ever you actually want to teach.

Thanks for looking into this, @uskoolfish @musicwind and @MusakParent . I found these same discrepancies. I finally just called Oberlin directly, and the MMT program is no longer an option; the last class graduated in July, and the program has been phased out. There is a new Masters program in Pedagogy, but I am not clear on all the details of that. It is called P.A.C.E., and you may want to look into that as an option. Oberlin IS in the process of rolling out a new website, and they were very grateful to know that things were very confusing online.

Thanks for making that phone call!

I think there are “Music and Neurosciences” programs both at UNC-Chapel Hill, and UNC-Greensboro. He may find these programs intellectually challenging.

How about the Masters of Arts in Teaching degree (one year) at Longy in LA? Longy is now part of Bard College and the program is inspired by the El Sistema system. http://longy.edu/social-change-through-music/mat/
