I'm new to the forum. S is a junior, interested in music education, primary instrument is alto sax. Jacobs School, Ithaca College, Ohio State, and Michigan State are places we will visit. I don't want to limit him geographically (yet). Anyone have suggestions on schools with strong sax studios? Thank you.

mom4989, welcome.

Straight music ed is often most cost effective at your own state system, and the curriculum is geared to meet state specific initial licensure/certification parameters.

Having said that, there are reasons to look outside at both oos and privates, as often audition based talent and/or academic and stats based merit awards will bring the costs in line or below a state school. Strength of program, specific faculty, higher peer group all are valid reasons to look beyond your own borders.

If you haven’t already done so, please read the thread by BassDad under featured discussions at the top of the page. I’ve also posted numerous thoughts on music ed programs (mostly from a string perspective) which can be found by searching.

Off the top of my head, you may want to look at Penn State, and Hartt (U/Hartford), both strong in music ed, and with good sax faculty.

In which state do you live?

We are in Ohio.
