Music Festival Master List

I wish I knew what our double bassist daughter is going to be doing this summer. Trying to figure it out! We are considering a move to CA (from SC) for her to go to either Idyllwild, Colburn Community School or UNCSA. There are no good bass instructors here in SC and she wants to move to a place where she can get that.

Regarding the summer - she was accepted to Brevard (she went there last year) - but my concern is that it’s just classical for 6.5 week. She also plays and loves jazz. Are there any music camps where she could do both? I know that Idyllwild has a 2 week jazz camp and then a 2 week symphony camp. Does anyone know if this is to the same level as Brevard? And then there the Stanford Jazz Institute. And Peabody Bass Works for a week. Trying to figure it all out without breaking the bank! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

@tripletmama Look at UNT - Bradetich master classes and Lynn Seaton Jazz workshops. In the past they’ve been held during different weeks, but this year it looks like they will be consecutive weeks.

D will be (most happily) attending Oberlin in Italy this summer, having been invited after her on campus Oberlin audition.

Another new summer program, two tracks - one in established repertoire and the other in New Music - Longy’s Divergent Studio. There are two performance options and a Divergent Composition Workshop - Neave Trio and loadbang in residence.

Anyone hear back from Eastern Music Festival yet? I was notified that I had placed on the wait list (bass trombone) and was wondering if anyone else got acceptance/wait list letters.

This is an amazing list and resource, thanks! A few little additions: NEC’s SICPP is for composers as well, as is Bowdoin, maybe others. In Europe composers can apply to European-American Musical Alliance, Etchings, Composit, Manifeste, Darmstadt, some of which may be more for college age than high schoolers however. Sonoma State, June in Buffalo, and others in the US. Walden is a composition program for creative kids and musicians, as well as experienced composers. Somewhere there is a list for composition alone, on the Walden site I believe.

Encore for Strings has been back up since 2016. They have an intensive chamber music session in June, and a Summer Academy in July. The Intensive Strings is at Gilmore Academy in Gates Mills, OH. The Summer Academy is held at CIM. Ages 11-23? I think? Strings only.

Interesting! I did not realized they had revived ENCORE. Just looked at the website and it looks very different from the old one, different faculty, different everything.

@glassharmonica I think it is a good thing. It was revived by someone who actually went to the original version. My son is going this summer. I know my son’s current viola teacher went to the one that was at Western Reserve years ago.

My daughter went to the old program when she was 12 and 13–she made a lot of lifelong friends and contacts there.

S is headed to the Sewanee Music Festival in TN for four weeks on a full tuition scholarship, and then the 2017 Alessi Seminar in Eugene, Oregon in August. Busy but exciting summer ahead for him!

D off to Tanglewood BUTI for Horn workshop and Winds… beyond excited

4 great weeks at the Sewanee music festival in the books, 2017 Alessi Seminar kicked off yesterday in Eugene, Oregon (selected as a Fellow). This is the one he’s been anticipating all summer as it has propelled many to the professional level…he is beyond stoked! Hope all other musicians and parents had an awesome summer season.

I just learned about a new summer festival at Banff: http://www.resonantbodiesfestival.org/banff/
(R)EVOLUTION RESONANT BODIES JULY 30-AUGUST 4, 2018
RBF teams up with Banff Centre and summer program co-artistic directors Claire Chase and Steve Schick for (R)evolution Resonant Bodies. It offers participants the opportunity to perform, create, collaborate, and experiment with their voices in an environment that encourages creativity and exploration. Led by a faculty of world-renowned artists, participants will explore the voice in its many forms, engaging vocal practices that span centuries and world traditions.
(R)evolution seeks passionate, adventurous individuals who identify as vocalists, instrumentalists, and/or composers. Those who are interested in stretching themselves beyond their current realm (as just a vocalist, instrumentalist, or composer) are especially welcomed, as are those who already identify as a composer-vocalist, instrumentalist-composer, vocal-instrumentalist, and so on. Voices from classical and non-classical training backgrounds are welcome; all participants will explore notated and non-notated practices.
