Brand new, looks brilliant, wish I had known about this earlier:

Is anyone familiar with the one-week program Creative Strings at Interlochen? How challenging is this program? My daughter has been playing the violin for 11 years and participated in a wonderful program last year - Chamber Music of the Rockies that was taught by a Juilliard quartet. She is Suzuki-trained.

Pakorny Low Brass Seminar, University of the Redlands - anyone can attend as an auditor with a day rate, or send in an audition tape for possible selection as a Performer attendee (S is a performer there this summer)

Alessi Trombone Seminar at University of New Mexico - anyone can attend as an auditor with a day rate, or send in an audition tape for possible selection as a Performer (there are two levels of performer) - my S did this one as an auditor last year and it was life changing. This is an amazing way to spend 9 days of the summer if you are a trombonist.
Note: the Alessi Seminar is in the US odd numbered years and held in Italy even numbered years (i.e. 2010 in Italy)

this one looks great, too.

for violin/viola/cello/piano.

D just told me that she is a fellow at CCM Spoleto. [CCM Spoleto || Summer Program of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM)](http://www.ccmoperalucca.org/)

Anyone here attending? 5 weeks of opera in Italy. This is the first year of this program- previously it was The Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca. The program offers:

Opera Production -those in the actual production
Opera Studies -2 levels of vocal programs
Accompanying - collaborative piano program
Orchestral & Chamber Music -they do it all -concerts, chamber & playi in the production
Conducting Program
Technical Program - for theater and production professionals

They differentiate those who attend for credit and those who are participants. There is also a tiered scholarship system, with fellows, scholars, associates and participants. That’s all I know for now.

I support Cosmos’ recommendation of Mount Royal University’s summer programme, Morningside Music Bridge (MMB). The first prize winner (and audience choice and Bach winner) of the 2010 Menuhin competition which concluded on the weekend in Oslo is a Morningside alumnus, as was at least one other semifinalist. The level of playing is generally very high. S did MMB last summer.

any piano camp/festival that are still receiving app?

It looks like the University of Miami Young Musician’s Camp has extended their deadline and has programs for piano, voice, jazz, and classical instrumental. [Summer Music Camp Miami, Florida | Univ. of Miami – Jazz, Piano, Rock, Vocal](Young Musicians Camp)

Pretty sure New England Music Camp in Maine still has spaces for most instruments this summer.

I know that the National High School Music Institute (NHSMI) at Northwestern University is still taking applications for piano and strings, maybe other instruments too The application is on the music website at [Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music](http://www.music.northwestern.edu) This is a five week program for high school students where the students study and perform quite a bit. Study includes large ensemble, chamber, and solo with private lessons and several performance opportunities. More details are on the website.

D attended NHSMI this year and it was announced that this was the last year for the program. Only the music program is being eliminated- the other programs within the high school institute will continue.

The institute director and the music institute director were vague about who made the decision, just that it wasn’t their choice and as far as they were concerned, the program was successful.

The rumor among students was that it was the decision of the school of music because not enough NHSMI attendees ended up applying to or accepted into the music school itself. At $4700 tuition for the 5 week summer program, I find it hard to believe that the institution had much of a financial investment, so who knows.

Just returned from a great European vacation. On our tour, we visited a gorgeous, very old castle in Vianden, Luxembourg. A bit off the beaten path. We noticed that it was about to have a Music Festival and School for 2 weeks in August 2010:

[Willkommen auf der Startseite](http://www.viandenfestival.eu/)

I can’t say if it’s good or bad, but the location is special and there seem to be many concerts scheduled, many in the castle itself. A very cool place to be for 2 weeks, if you can afford it. And the food will be superb, I am sure.

Heifetz international Music Institute

an extremely fun and definitely life-changing experience. take my words! :)

Percussionists - do you know about So Percussion’s Summer Institute at Princeton? [So Percussion Summer Institute](http://www.sopercussion.com/summerinstitute/)

From their website about last year: the four members of So Percussion and 26 students – ranging in age from 18 to 37 and representing 20 schools from around the globe – took over the beautiful campus of Princeton University for two weeks as well as taking trips to Baltimore, New York City, and Woodstock, NY. During the two-week course, students performed in six concerts and participated in classes and coachings with an array of composers and performers including Joe Gramley, Paul Lansky, Lukas Ligeti, Steve Mackey, Grey McMurray, NEXUS, Tristan Perich, Doug Perkins, Steve Reich, Steve Schick, Stuart Saunders Smith, and Dan Trueman.

The trips that took place as part of SoSI 2010 included a concert with Steve Reich, NEXUS, and So Percussion at the Maverick Concert Hall in Woodstock, NY, an all-Varese evening at Lincoln Center with performances by International Contemporary Ensemble and So Percussion conducted by Steve Schick, and participation in the Whartscape Festival in Baltimore, curated by Dan Deacon. Outreach concerts in Princeton included performances from the various focus sections at the Summer Institute – an exploration of controlled improvisation with Jason Treuting, a look at the ambient works of John Cage with Josh Quillen, an analysis of Terry Riley’s In C and the Fluxus Movement with Eric Beach, and an introduction to Steve Reich’s work with a focus on learning and performing Drumming with Adam Sliwinski. These outreach concerts took place at the Princeton Library, at the outdoor Albert Hines community plaza, and in a private concert at composer Steve Mackey’s home.

Has anyone heard of or been to the Castleton Festival?

http://www.castletonfestival.org/images/CastletonFestAnnouncement2011.pdf

Has any one attended or heard much about the Atlantic Music Festival [Atlantic Music Festival 2011 - Home | Atlantic Music Festival 2011](http://www.atlanticmusicfestival.org/) held at Colby College? It’s among the music festivals DS is considering for the summer. He’s also applied to Brevard. AMF was recommended to him by his composition instructor at NEC. I was suprised to see that it wasn’t among the festivals listed here.

My son’s composition professor, George Tsontakis is at the Atlantic Music Festival, as is David Ludwig from Curtis with whom my son worked last summer. Both are terrific composition professors and lots and lots of fun, too. My son considered going there this summer, but didn’t want to go anywhere for so long. It sounds like a great festival and I’m sure your son would enjoy it.

Thanks, SpiritManager!

Has anyone heard of Imani Chamber Music Festival?
