Does a music hook necessarily have to include prestigious awards? What about impacting the community through music? Does that count?

But isn't that more like "Community Service" rather than a "hook"

Yes, that would just be community service and not a hook.
These people who win awards, well frankly, they play at senior citizen homes as well.

So would that fall under the category of "passion"? (music/community service)

You could be very passionate about it yes; but remember, so is every other musician who applies.

i play a very Very obscure instrument (at least in the US) (..) but i have not been competing (yet). would my application still be considered more carefully because of it? ro would they not even care for that instrument?

What instrument is it? Shamisen!? OMG! Or sitar? OMG!

lol no, sorry. it is the traditional and ancient chinese instrument by the name of ............... gu zhen =) though i did take up the chinese "version" of shamisen er hu (much more violin-like and melodic in sound).

That might help if there's a club/organization on campus that "recruits" these instruments

Does the marching band recruit members? I realize competition is tough, but would uncommon marching experience make a favorable decision for a candidate who is otherwise on the line?

(And by on the line I mean just another valedictorian; not a kid at the bottom of the first decile)
