Music Indstury Program

I am interested in majoring in Music Industry at Drexel. The website says in the Q&A section:
B.I hear the program is very competitive. What type of student are you looking for?

We are lucky enough to have a great program with exceptional students, faculty, and staff. Music Industry at Drexel is a community of people, all of whom share a passion for music and the music industry. We're looking for students who will bring something to this community. Of course, we check transcripts for a competitive GPA and test scores. We read all of the recommendations, and look closely at extracurricular activities.

We also look at applications to see what music or industry-related activities a student has participated in. Maybe they are in a band, or manage their friend's band. They might do recording or composing in their basement, or participate in street team activities for their favorite artists. We've had applicants who have done industry-related internships or have been very involved with school music productions and concerts as a musician, technician, or promoter. Participation in these types of activities shows us that an applicant is really interested in what we're about.

I get good grades (3.7 GPA), I got decent SAT scores (1230 out of 1600), and I play piano (for about 10 years) and guitar (for about 2 years), but I have NO music industry experience. Is having this experience important? Is there anyone here who goes to Drexel or was accepted into the program who could tell me if I would get in? I am above the average GPA for Drexel admission, which is 3.4, and well within the middle 50% for SAT scores.

Also, what are some other schools with a good music industry program?

Drexel is very competitive. When my son and I visited last November, the head of the Music Industry program said they select 54 out of 800+ applicants. They are looking for someone who has a resume and/or a non-conventional avenue to pursure. My son was not accepted to Drexel. I suspect he didn’t have a strong enough resume. His GPA was a little lower than yours and his SATs were 20 points higher.

As for other schools, I have supplied a link for you. One school to consider would be Saint Rose in Albany, NY. The program there is well-balanced and there is opportunities to work with the communications department and gain some video experience. With your grades and an increase of 10 points in your SATs, you would be eligible for a $14,000 scholarship. The facilites are all less than 5 years old and are beautiful. The people there are terrific. They require an audition. My son decided not to go there because he was accepted into a more technical sound recording program.

Good luck.

Also, check out the Hartt School. Strong and well established program.
College of St Rose has pretty good contacts in the Albany, NY area for music industry majors and friend’s son has a paid internship this summer and was placed there through CSR. Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Saratoga, (the Capitol region) have a number of gigging opportunities, too for music majors.
