Music Industry Major?

Hey everyone,
I'm new here. So, I know a lot of schools offer a music major, which requires you to play an instrument. But does anyone know of a school where I can learn the engineering and business side of the industry? I really don't want to play an instrument...

If you don’t play an instrument, I’m not sure you’re too terribly likely to get into a Music Technology/Music Engineering program. I can only think of 2 schools that don’t require an audition or a demonstration of instrumental proficiency: IU Jacobs Recording Arts and LMU Recording Arts. However, when I visited IU a few weeks back they said it’s actually been several years since they accepted anybody who didn’t play an instrument, so I think they’re out of the mix unless you can compile a really excellent portfolio of creative work. LMU is a possibility, but keep in mind they’re in the film school rather than a music school. I’ve heard the program is good, and LMU’s film school is great, but it’s less music-focused. There’s also the Clive Davis program at NYU, but I’m not sure whether it requires instrumental proficiency…maybe one of the other members can fill me (and you!) in on that?

Now, if you’re aiming for music business, the requirements can be quite different. There are two very well-regarded programs I know of (Music Industry at USC and the Bandier Program at Syracuse) that do not require instrumental proficiency. However, you really need to demonstrate to them in your application that you have a passion for the music industry, and it helps to start early. I have a friend who went through the music industry program at USC, and he got his start doing publicity for local bands in my hometown. It ended up being a really great thing to put on his resume and I imagine it looked nice on his application as well!

I’m judging by your post that you don’t play an instrument right now. Have you been involved in music in any other ways?

Drexel has a music indutry program which does not require an audition. Very competitive. They accept 54 out of 800 applicants.

Belmont University has a music business program which is separate from their music program. Not sure what its requirements are, though.
