Music Industry Major

What are the best music industry programs and schools available in the Northeast?

Well, there seems to be a lot of talk about the program at Drexel in the College of Media Arts and Design. Also, there are programs at Syracuse U, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Fredonia, University of Hartford, Berklee, Hofstra, Northeastern, New Haven, William Patterson and more.

So, lots of choices. I don’t know how to rate or rank them, though. You would probably need to visit them.

^ thanks for that list. Drexel seems very established and good. Would like a little more info on Northeastern if anyone has

No specific info, but both Drexel and Northeastern have co-op opportunities. That could give a lot of hands-on education and job potential when you graduate.

I teach at James Madison University in VA… east, but more mid-Atlantic/ Southern than north… I do not teach in the School of Music, but I know they have a strong Music Industry major… however, students in the major must be admitted on a primary instrument to the School of Music. Students who are not highly proficient on an instrument (or voice) Can declare the music industry minor… often in conjunction with business for studetns who want to go into music management or theatre for students who want to pursue recording and live-mix sound design opportunities.

[Northeastern University Department of Music](http://www.music.neu.edu/)

Click on Degree Programs and then on Music Industry.

thanks for all the great info. I do not want to play an instrument so the minor at james madison is interesting… opposed to northeastern where it seems thats not an option.

Northeastern has Music Industry both as a major and a minor. On the website linked above - go to “Degree Programs”, then at the bottom of the column with the degrees (majors) there is the word “minors” click there and it will list minors.
They also have a couple of dual majors - Music Tech & Computer Science, and Multimedia Studies & Music Technology. The Music tech program is very composition oriented.
Music Industry does not require audition, Music tech requires interview and portfolio of original compositions.
Would love to hear from anyone in this program - either major or minor - as it’s on my son’s list as well.

Looks like Drexel and NYU have top programs but i cant get into NYU…any other ideas

Some prior threads (by no means all of them) with additional options. There are also pertinent links within some of them.

I know a young lady who went to Monmouth for music industry. She had a summer great internship in the business in New York after her junior year - not sure what has happened since, but she liked the program.

Columbia College Chicago now offers a BM degree in Contemporary and Popular Music.

Can anyone tell more about either Drexels major, James Madisons major, or Northeasterns minor? Experiences?

i’m a freshman music industry major at northeastern. i applied to nyu and syracuse for music industry and a bunch of other schools to major in history. once i knew i was dead set on pursuing music industry, it was between neu, nyu, and su. i was accepted at syracuse and rejected at nyu and i ultimately chose neu for the top-ranked co-op program and because of its location in the heart of boston. you don’t need any formal training in an instrument when applying for music industry at neu. i had zero knowledge in music theory and very little experience in instruments so its not a problem. you learn the basics/fundamentals of music theory and ear training your first two years to become proficient in theory and composition and literature and music history but you start out your first year taking level one music industry courses (basic) and you continue with industry courses and specifics (such as law, recording, tech, music supervision, etc) as you progress as a student. and whats great about neu is co-op! i’m excited to get experience in the music business and i can stay in boston or go anywhere else in the world for co-op. plus, we have amazing teachers who are very experienced and knowledgeable in the music industry. neu is a FINE choice for any students looking to become a music industry major, esp. for those who want work experience and for those who have little to no knowledge in music theory.

Great to finally hear from a NEU Music Industry major, there aren’t many of you out there.

Can you tell me more about why you choose NEU over Syracuse? I have to make the same choice and yes, Boston over Syracuse should be reason enough, but the Bandier program sounds so great. Do you thin the NEU program is similar? They don’t tell you much about it on their website. And have you been able to peek yet at what types of coops you’ll have access to? Would love to get the input I need to tip the scales once and for all.

piegirl,

do I understand correctly that you have been accepted by Northeastern and Syracuse as a music industry major for the school year starting in September? If so, I would like to include that information in the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/817953-master-list-acceptances-fall-2010-a-55.html</a></p>

It would help if you could tell us the degree (BM, BS, something else) and the exact title of each major. Thanks.

Yes, same major, BS in Music Industry. Syracuse is called the Bandier Program and Northeastern University is a 5 year (you can do 4) coop program.

yeeeeaaaahhhh boss!!! NEU music industry class of 2014!! :P

dubskillets,

May I take it that means you were also accepted at Northeastern this year? If so, we would like to add you to the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/6280-suggestions-colleges-music-majors-37.html</a> if you will supply a list of the schools where you were accepted and the degree program you applied to for each of them.

i got into syracuse but i wasn’t accepted into the bandier program (just the music history and cultures major at the college of arts and sci) and i was told that they don’t accept transfers into the bandier program, that you had to be accepted as a freshman to do it, so the choice was pretty obvious for me. but i’m not gonna lie, had i been accepted, i most likely would’ve chosen syracuse.

i won’t know more about what specific co-ops there are until the fall so i’m sorry i can’t help you out there. but the main reason why i chose neu was because of co-op. boston has a lot of music venues and some independent record labels that a lot of students do their co-ops at but most go out of state for their co-ops, mostly to new york city or los angeles because those cities have so much more to offer music-opportunities-wise. just finished freshman year here two weeks ago and i LOVED every day of it.

they’re both great schools so good luck on your choice! (i think most people had to choose a school by now so i’m incredibly sorry if this post is too late to help you decide)
