Music Major at Amherst

Hi Guys,
I was wondering about the music major at Amherst, specifically the performance aspect of it. I really would like to go to college for vocal performance and am applying to a couple conservatories, but I also really value a liberal arts education and so I want to go to a school where I can balance both music and liberal arts. My grandfather went to Amherst and I know liberal-arts wise it’s a great school so I was wondering how it balances out music school-wise. I don’t need it to be conservatory-caliber, but a solid program with good instruction and some performance opportunities.

That’s a good question that I’ll be following…

In fact, I did a quick search to see if this has been answered previously. The following link doesn’t answer it. But it asks a very similar question and the course the responses took should be worth considering:

Great music scene w/5 College Consortium. Can take classes at any of the other schools. My daughter applied ED w/an interest in Jazz…lots of jazz happening around that area! Not sure re vocal performance.

Take a look at Mount Holyoke. As I recall, they had a respectable vocal program. Also, the 5 College Consortium (which would be available to you as an Amherst student, of course) provides lots of opportunities to perform and study at the different schools.

Good luck!
