Music major in need of transfer advice!

I am a music major (vocalist) looking for a good college to transfer to in California. I've researched a bunch, but still do not know which is a better school for music. Any ideas?

Colburn, USC, UCLA are all good. What type of program are you looking for?

Colburn does not have a VP program.

Ah I didn’t know that musicamusica. I’m a violinist :)

I’m not sure yet. Out of UCLA and USC which do you think is the better choice?

They are both good choices. UCLA has a smaller program and has been producing some VERY strong singers lately (two of Michael Deans’ students are on their way to the MONC finals in NYC). They also consistently place singers in the Domingo-Thornton program at LA Opera. USC has a longer history as an eminent school of music and a larger music program in general.
Just a word of warning. This has been discussed elsewhere, but music credits are very difficult to transfer.

Just adding some music tranfer info. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/862312-how-difficult-transfer-one-music-school-another.html

UCLA is a great program, but, like musicamusica points out, it is a small program, very small as in approximately 20 singers total. That means that unless you are at the very top of the talent pool, admission could be out of reach, especially for a transfer student. Are you in California now? Are you at a CC with 60 completed transferable credits, and you’ve completed the general ed requirements for CSU and UC? If so, you might want to look at Bob Cole Conservatory at Long Beach–they share some faculty with USC, and some of the permanent faculty used to teach at USC. It’s a strong vocal performance program, and there is lots of scholarship money. At least the general ed would all transfer in that case. If you don’t have that many credits you might also look at Chapman U. Both of these schools focus on undergraduates, USC less so.
