It seems that Musical Theatre can be studied from these two different majors. Can anyone comment on the advantages or disadvantages of each?
Thank you!

Music - More Vocal Training
Theatre - More Theatre Training

Generally.

Or!

Just take a degree in Musical Theatre! haha

This subject was discussed exhaustively back in December, in a thread called "Musical Theater Major or Acting Major". I don't know how to bump -- but you can find it with a search. People have disagreed about the advantages/disadvantages -- but tom's post condenses it pretty nicely.

I understand that there will be more vocal training in a music major, but it seems that the MT programs written about on this site are mostly theatre based.

What about entering into a vocal performance major and come at a MT education from that direction? Are there disadvantages to this approach?

I believe CMU has this option. Are there any other programs out there where vocal performance could be used as a stepping stone to MT? Or is this approach even adviseable?

Thanks!

It certainly worked out just fine for Audra McDonald :)
(vocal performance major - Juilliard)

There is no one path to a career in musical theatre. BA, BFA, BM, MT major, theatre major, college dropout, no college whatsoever - all have worked for some people.

If you have the abilities, the audition skills, and the charisma, your path doesn't much matter in the long run.

I tried to edit my post - but CC was being REAALLLLY slow, and I couldn't get on in the time limit. When I said your path doesn't matter in the long run -- obviously, some paths might enhance your training, or your industry contacts over others. Howver, if a less traveled path is a good one for you, for whatever reason, do know that opportunities can exist in the future.
