Hello!
I'm going to be a senior and am doing lots of college research so I could apply to different music schools in search of what I'm looking for. Hopefully anyone can help me! I'm a vocalist and would like to major in music education (choral, preferably with stylistic option of jazz) and would like to double major/ minor in JAZZ VOCAL performance. Some schools have opera, some schools don't like double majors, some schools don't even offer jazz.
So far my list extends to
Ithaca
FSU
Manhattan School of music
The City College of NY
Penn State
??
I'm trying to have a broad take on schools from some with exceptionally good music programs to average ones, any opinions on the schools listed above or any others would be SO GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Thanks!!

Try the Vocal Music Major forum available on the CC main page.

Ithaca: It’s very respected for its music education program, but it’s very hard to get in (must be good academically and musically). I believe it is known for strings.

FSU: It’s one of the best music programs out there. It’s super competitive, with excellent faculty and musicians. People here don’t mess around once they get in.

I don’t know much about the others. Just thought I’d give you a little detail. :)

Looks like a great list so far. Berklee? New School in NYC?

We loved Manhattan :)

Have your researched offerings at the schools you listed so you know they have what you want?

Do you have financial constraints?

Consider state universities and colleges (I see you have City U. of NY on there).

These are not my areas of knowledge so others will have better ideas…

faithciavarella has two identical threads started now on this forum, with different responses under each (this one plus one entitled “Music Ed/jazz Vocal Performance”. Wonder if there is a way an administrator can combine these two so we don’t have duplication?

FSU gives an automatic 2/3 reduction of out of state tuition to music majors. They will also allow you to stack music merit and academic merit. It can add up to a really nice financial package and all of the FSU music programs are top notch. If you have never visited, you should go and give them a look.

I go to Illinois Wesleyan University, which is a small LAC in Bloomington, IL, about 2 hours from Chicago. You have not have heard of it since it’s so small, but the Music Ed program actually has a near 100% job placement rating right after graduation, music ed is one of our top programs. We also have a jazz studies minor, so if you’re open to small midwestern schools, you should look into it! I’m a senior performance major, not music ed.

@Scubachick - is the FSU you’re referring to Florida State Univ? I’m looking into Vocal Music programs for my daughter

Yes.
