<p>I’m an accomplished sax player, and if i get into Penn, I was just wondering how the music scene is…how is the marching band, jazz band, etc.</p>
<p>penn band = goofy, scramble band. they play at the football games and stuff.</p>
<p>jazz band = a big bang style ensemble, plus they split off into smaller combo groups. one of my hallmates is in it so i've heard about it. </p>
<p>i dont know how good the bands are relative to other schools.</p>

<p>Unless you play another instrument, I know orchestra isn't an option for you, but it is quite good. We played Tchiak Symphony 5 and Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto at our last concert. The Wind Ensemble is not as good as the orchestra in comparison. However, it's a good group. To give you an idea about the kind of stuff we play: at our last concert we played a Sousa march, Shostakovitch's "Festive Overture," our smaller ensemble played "Petite Symphonie" by Gounod, "Kentucky Harmony" by Grantham, and "Passacaglia on B-A-C-H." For our next concert, we're working on "A Movement for Rosa" by Camphouse, Hindemith's "March," "Marche Militaire Francaise" by Saint-Saens, and "Lincolnshire Posy" by Granger. Even if you're not interested in this group, you can always start your own chamber/jazz group.</p>
<p>I'm a violist and I'd like to play in Penn's orchestra, but I'm not a music major of any kind. Can I still play in it, and are there auditions??</p>

<p>the band isn't serious like high school bands sometimes are. it's just for fun, mostly.</p>
<p>I don't quite understand what you mean by popular and a big presence. If you mean within the band, of course saxes an important part. If you mean within the context of the whole school, well, Penn is just under 10,000 undergrads and thus popularity (or lack thereof) is just not possible like it might have had in HS (certain Greeks, athletes, DP columnists, and groups like Mask and Wig may have an impact on a large part of campus, but there is no group that runs all of campus. It all depends on what crowd(s) you are in.). As far as the band's popularity, there are about 50-85 people on any given day. Not the biggest numbers considering the school's size, but sufficient. Another gauge of popularity is reception to the shows, which are overall positive, but always depend on what show is being done. Student's love it if the band plays Reel Big Fish and spell 420, the Old Guard loves the band for playing The Red and Blue, the Alma Mater, etc and everybody loves Drink a Highball. Thus </p>
<p>Band is about about a 4-5 hour committment any given week during football season, plus the games. Of course, you are not required to go to any event so if you cannot make it you don't have to show up. Obviously if you want to perform during the show you must attend rehearsal, but its not like HS with a regimented mandatory schedule. And there are no competitions, though writing and performing a better show than the opposing band is aways good.</p>
<p>Anyone know if a large amount of clarinet players are graduating? (Please say yes)</p>
