Music opportunities at Carleton for a non music major

D is a prospective Carleton student. I would like to know what opportunities there are to play violin at Carleton for a non music major. Orchestras? Small ensembles? orchestra pit for plays?

Related question: is there a an opportunity for a music minor at Carleton?

You might check into St. Olaf - it's in same town and has a renowned music program. Even if you're at Carleton, perhaps there is a reciprocal agreement between the schools for things like this?

My son and I just visited Carleton last week, and he had the same question. We toured the music facilities and he talked to several people, and felt that there were ample opportunities at Carleton for non-music majors. There are a number of ensembles, a capella groups, music lessons in multiple instruments, and the practice facilities look good and are open to anyone to use during evening hours. My son felt comfortable that he would be able to get what he needs at Carleton without needing to go across town to St. Olaf (it is my understanding since the two schools are on different schedules, cross registering is difficult in any case) - I'd suggest that you email the music department, or someone in admissions to ask to be put in touch with someone in the music department.
