I’m planning on majoring in engineering, but I also want to continue playing music. I have played classical piano for almost 12 years. I also play flute in my school’s concert band, piccolo in marching band, and have played flute in pit orchestra for a few musicals (I was the only student/non-professional to do so for my school’s production this year). I’m especially interested in orchestra. What colleges have good music opportunities for non-majors? Is minoring a good option?
TONS of colleges will have opportunities for non-majors to continue playing. My D looked at a number of LACs and each one had chances to continue playing. This was a question she would ask during campus tours/interviews – I suggest you do the same.
FWIW my D attended Lafayette College and played in the orchestra all four years (probably would have done something similar at other schools she looked at). She did not minor in music but she did take some music courses which she thoroughly enjoyed.
