Music performance at Columbia?

Beethoven 6, "Pastoral," definitely

ohh that is a very beautiful symphony, there's one part where the violins play repeated artificial harmonics up and down the string... quite tricky

the pastoral, i absolutely love it. So pastorally..lol

has anyone played or heard the rachmaninoff 2nd symphony? tricky as hell, but so frakened genius. it's really grandeur sounding.

I'm listening to the Rachmaninoff as we speak! Good stuff.

I don't like the symphonies that are too thick and oppressive. That's partly why I like the Pastoral better than many later symphonies. It's dramatic at times but also really pretty and uplifting and songlike sometimes. I like Mahler 1 for the same reason BUT I also think it gets too thick at times. For my tastes. Mozart 40 is also great. I like a lot of short orchestral pieces, too, because I just think they don't try to be too heavy and symphonic and grrrgg. Some symphonies are just TOO LONG! There Is No Needdd.

I don't mind the big symphonies (well, some of them), but I think I like the shorter pieces more. Usually if I go to a concert and they're playing some standard like, persay, Schubert 6 - they played that at the last concert I went to - I'm thinking, GOOD LORD WHEN WILL IT END!? The only reason I think I stay pretty aware during those performances is because I keep watching the expressions on the wind players' faces...

I have a much better tolerance for chamber music. It's so much fun to watch, and string quartets always keep my attention.

is the symphonie espagnole standard concerto repertoire or a symphony as the name would indicate?

standard concerto

weird... haha, that would've been my favorite symphonie... i mean symphony ;) just out of curiosity, what makes a standard concerto separate from a symphony? i used to think it was the solo part, but i have found that many symphonies do use solo's in select movements

I like Rachmaninov too. Rhapsody is great, especially Var. 18.

have you played the 2nd and 4th movements? It's like taking a thrill ride playing them!

for rachmaninoff? ya... it's VERY crazy... sethblue u in a symphony orchestra?

yea, proffesional one. You?

u get paid?? i think we talked about this... haha semiprofessional, half paid, half volunteer, still audition only tho... for central jersey, i believe we are the only symphony with a year round schedule in central jersey with exception to the nj symphony?

yea i get paid. Do you get get paid? What pieces have you played recently?

i get paid, but not as much as the pro players do... not nearly as much... um... this concert will be the mozart k366 idomeneus... the schumann balletmusik... and the beethoven symph 9.

my rate is $27/hour, how much are you paid?

haha... oh man i wish i had that... i get paid by performance, and not even on some... sometimes 50... sometimes 100, it's more of a courtesy because it is a "community" oriented orchestra... but i do know that the pro's we get make a lot for the one performance

Not bad at all. Beats bagging groceries.

yep, plus i do enjoy playing, and it's just more practice time for me
