music practice rooms

is there any way that someone not involved with the music school could have access to the practice rooms?

i've been playing piano practically all my life, and though i can't really fit piano into my schedule (and can't make it in time for the auditions anyway), i'd like to still be able to do some leisure playing now and then...

are there pianos anywhere else on campus?

I’m not a pianist but I play guitar and will be bringing my amplifier to my dorm on campus! Hopefully I won’t disturb anyone haha

Well, i’d totally bring my piano to campus if i could. lol

My dorm had a piano in the lobby area. Lots of people often played it.

I’ve heard that Jester has a Pianos on some floors or something.

Wish they had drums somewhere so that i could jam with someone

Ive seen lots of people strumming on guitars outside during the day.

I’d wish for a practice room too. I played piano for some eight years. Be good to get back to it!

I love playing my acoustic and electric alone but playing with a drummer can be more satisfying. I’d love to be a great pianist but i spend too much time playing guitar :)

You don’t really have to be a music major to use the pianos in the practice rooms on the 5th and 6th floors of MRH.

There are pianos many places on campus.

Dorms: duren’s formal study lounge, san jac’s formal study lounge, prather’s lobby, carothers lounge, right outside the dining area of kinsolving, andrews dorm living room, blanton dorm, jester west’s texas cultures lounge, jester east’s lounge beside the tv screen in the main lobby

Music building 5th and 6th floors, as stated above. No one is gonna ask if you’re a music major or in one of the musical ensembles, even though technically you’re supposed to be in one of those. Just go in anyway.

wow thanks for all the suggestions! i’ll be living in the honors quad somewhere so i guess i can play on those pianos sometimes, but i think i’ll try to go over to the music building whenever i can (even though it’s hella far away) to have some privacy especially since i might end up taking lessons from a teacher in Austin not affiliated with UT. :)

Most of the pianos are in study lounges? That’s…kind of ironic. lol

You’d think people would want silence like in a library…I mean unless everyone just played classical. Couldn’t really go all out. I’ll probably look into buying a keyboard later on. haha

Thanks kkwa – I’ll probably check it out at some point.

All of the dorms with pianos have other study lounges or quiet places to study as well. Duren has two lounges in the lobby (one of them is an enclosed lounge with the piano) and a small study lounge on each floor. Same with san jac. Prather’s piano is in a hallway near the front lobby and the study lounge is another room down the hall. So it’s not really too big a problem. Unless people are already studying in those lounges with a piano in which case it’s best to check back at another time, or if someone’s playing in there when you get in just go to a quieter place. Common courtesy / give-and-take :)

Note about instruments (or other loud noises, for that matter) in rooms-- several people bring guitars, keyboards, etc. to their rooms and it’s sometimes ok to play during the day. Definitely not at night during quiet hours. But even during the day, you have to remember that people take naps, are studying in their rooms, want quiet time or at least no annoying banging sounds while they’re just watching tv or something. So try to wear headphones or keep the volume down when playing. I had a friend 2 doors down who brought a violin, clarinet, oboe, and keyboard to the dorm. She practiced during peak class times when no one was at the dorm so it wasn’t bothersome.

The last two weeks of each semester are finals weeks. The week before that is usually when the last midterms are taken. So for those 3 weeks, the dorms have 24 hour quiet hours to give everyone a peaceful studying environment. Don’t be like the guy who sang and played his guitar LOUDLY at 11am outside in our courtyard during finals week. Midterms and finals are an extremely stressful time for everyone and lack of sleep + hours of studying + the difference between two letter grades = human ticking time bombs.
