Hi, I am a senior and will be applying to Penn. I am wondering if UPenn has a good music program? I am not planning on becoming a music major, but a minor. I am wondering this because most of my extracurricular activities mainly involve music (orchestras, community service, ect.). I think that if UPenn gives some support for the music department, these ECs may be appealing. Though, if their music program and orchestra is not really popular or strong, I worry that my musical background and interest may go unnoticed in admissions due to a possible lack of attention to the music department. I also plan on sending a CD of my works. Any insight/suggestions/comments? (appreciably from UPenn students and/or music students at Penn) Thank you.

If he or she doesn’t respond, PM “wayward_trojan”. He or she is a current student who is really knowledgeable (and very critical) about Penn’s music programs.

I only know from my and my kids’ music-centric friends at Penn that they find lots of stuff to get engaged in, and they tend to like it. Music is definitely important and valued at Penn.

On the other hand, given that Curtis is a few blocks away, and Curtis students can take classes at Penn, and Curtis students do a lot with the academic music program . . . the local standards for really impressing people with how great you are on your instrument are pretty high.

Talking about the music programs at Penn. How are the Vocal programs?

I can’t speak to the vocal program, but I’m happy to answer questions about the instrumental program and music curriculum. Feel free to PM me with specifics.

wayward_trojan could you please help me with my question? thanks
