Music Program Information

Anyone have information on the music program at UCF? My D is specifically interested in a Music performance Minor in Flute which she would complete with a degree in Biotechnology. Lacking a good way to explain the level of her play I’d add that she just placed second chair in the top band in her district and advanced to second round auditions for all state (next week). She takes weekly lessons. I think she’s a very solid high school flute player but she’ll be unexceptional in college. It’s an important part of her life and she’d like to continue to improve.

She will be coming in with her associates degree and 60 college credit hours from high school so as I understand Florida’s weird 10% over major credit hour rule she should be fine for hours?

What are the bands and orchestra like?

What is the vibe in the Marching band? It doesn’t look overwhelming from a time perspective? She has never marched - should she even try?
I notice that Minors are not eligable to take lessons from “studio” are there other opportunities to take lessons?

We’ll be visiting in November - anything related to the minor that we should check out?

I have no clue about UCF, but she might like USF. The building/amenities are top notch (FSU is not as nice in some ways) since fairly new. Overall, the campus is heavy in biotech, very strong there. The marching band is huge and awesome. The voice department is a wreck although the new choir director is great. Overall, I think she would like it although I have no clue about the flute faculty, you would have to check it out. I have always preferred the USF campus to UCF’s.
