Music program with opera and musical theater

Does anyone know of any programs that have both the opera and musical theater program under the music department. So far the only one I can find is Oklahoma City University.

Arizona State offers a BM in MT, offered within the Herberger SOM.

Baldwin-Wallace, NYU Steinhardt

Forgot about Catholic University and, I believe, James Madison U.

Indiana University has flourishing programs in both areas. Catholic and JMU seconded.

I believe Westminster Choir College/Rider U has both Opera and MT under music-- and that you can study opera with an MT minor.

For those in the know… I know that it’s very subjective to try and rate music schools - but how do these programs fit in with the more competitive classical “only” schools that are generally discussed here on the boards?

My D would love a program like this but has decided to focus only on classical/opera while she completes high school and more than likely college. (She’s a Soph just starting at Walnut Hill). I know when she applies, they will expect her to apply to more of the “most” competitive schools. I know of Steinhardt’s rep - but what about the rest?

I was reading about CMU the other day and it seemed like they don’t even have a BM, just a BFA (VP) which also includes acting/dance training. (which also intrigued my D since she does have a background in this) How different would that type of program be? My S just graduated from there last year (BS Bio) and I vaguely remember that there weren’t any BM grads in the program book.

For those who have kids who want to do “classical” singing and musical theatre. It is very difficult to study both in depth in college. Contemporary MT singing uses the belt voice extensively - which is frowned upon in the classical world. Most classical teachers will want their students to stay away from contemporary MT (golden age stuff is usually an exception). I’m not a voice expert - just a parent so others can probably explain better. I have one kid who is majoring in MT and one who will be voice performance (BM) so I hear lots of discussions about this topic at home.

There have been many threads on this subject in both the music and musical theater forums on CC.

CMU’s MT program is more focused on acting than singing. Please be aware that a Bachelor’s in performance for voice at CMU is a BFA also, not a BM as at many other schools, so you really can’t go by the degree name in this instance.

I did not understand the OP’s question. Is your D looking to study BOTH as an undergrad? For example, at ASU though you are in the SOM and might sing a bit of classical rep and MT rep in your studio, you must make a choice between MT Performance or Classical Voice performance. The two areas of study are not interchangeable, they are different tracks.

University of Michigan

Is the OP interested in a BM in MT or a BFA in MT? I know that U Mich offers a BFA in MT, not a BM.

I think the OP means to study BOTH in undergrad- as musicamusica was asking… It sounds like from what Gwen Fairfax said that it could be possible at Westminster, but the only one I know of is Northwestern- and the MT part has to be auditioned for later (sophomore year I think).

Basically I am curious
which school’s of music house both vocal and musical theater programs. It seems the majority of schools do not and musical theater is part of the theater program.

at James Madison there is a BA Musical Theatre Program in the School of Theatre and Dance and a BM Music Theatre Program in the School of Music. The students are integrated in musical theatre classes and productions, but the programs audition separately, and the overall program of study is quite different. The BA Musical Theatre students follow a more similar course of study to the Theatre students, the BM Music Theatre students follow a more similar course of study to the Vocal Performance students. The BM Music Theatre students study quite a bit of classical repertory (generally at least 1/2) in their lessons, The BA Musical Theatre students usually study one classical piece per semester, but the remainder of their repertory is musical theatre.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. :)

sread1, if that’s what you mean, it’s true the University of Michigan School of Music is the home college to both vocal and MT programs.

Lots of colleges have both- very few let a student do both at once.

KatMT, I sent you a PM. Thanks.
