Hi everyone! I'm a junior and am starting to seriously look at schools. I think that I'd like to major in music, does anyone have experience with the music department at Gettysburg? I play flute and sing and would like to continue doing music in college even if I don't end up majoring in it. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

hi flutie, i'm going to be a sophomore next year at gburg. i'm currently music ed but will most likely be switching to performance.

the voice faculty is fantastic, and they are currently looking for more teachers across the board (especially in strings). there are some extremely talented flautists here, but i haven't heard the greatest things about the teacher. choirs here are fantastic, and so is orchestra and band, but the director of both orchestra and band is a real jerk. he might be leaving though, i'll keep you posted.

to be perfectly honest, music at gettysburg is extremely difficult, but despite the difficulty i don't feel like it is a legitimate music program yet. the conservatory is brand new, but it by no means matches up to real conservatories such as peabody or oberlin. sorry to be blunt about this. there are some great qualities about the music program, and i love the college itself. if you are EXTREMELY serious about music, though, this is not the place for you. if you have any questions, please feel free to IM me (emisfinegold).

Have you found that the fact that the school is connected to it makes the program more competitive? As a flute player and vocalist, I have to deal with a lot of competition, but am looking for a college music setting that is more laid back. Is there a lot of pressure at the conservatory, similar to that at Oberlin or Peabody?

Any other takers on this topic?
