Music Scene at Dartmouth

anybody up on the music scene at dartmouth (local groups/places to chill, on campus performances, etc etc)? i'm a bit worried that smallness of school/surrounding area = not much of a scene esp compared to that of my estranged lover, yale.

well I know that when I was there they had a bunch of Dartmouth Groups....the Dartmouth Aires (a cappella group) is great--they are famous.
To be honest with you, of all the campuses i visited, Dartmouth had the most going on.

related question:

how strong is the instrumental music program at dartmouth? like is it hard to get into performing groups and do you have to be a music major?

thanks

right, right. but i mean more like inde/rock groups/bands/starting musicians in the area/on campus rather than dartmouth orchestra and a cappella groups, ya kno?

dangerkajdlksjd, i would imagine it's much easier to get in performing groups given how few ppl you have to compete against for such opportunities/positions, which is a decided advantage of a smaller school

very ture, i was just wondering in and of its self about the level there....

good question....

Instrumental groups - not just for majors. Some by audition but not cut-throat. See this link: http://hop.dartmouth.edu/ensembles/index.html

Also -take a look at the attached link (look at it Month by Month rather than day by day to get a quicker over view):

As for local groups, start-up musicians, etc., hopefully one of the current students will be able to address that.

there are quite a few very good student bands...Rightly Guided Thieves is one of the best/most well known, and I think is mainly rock. My friend is in Low Rusted Pipes, which does rock but also more blue-grassy type stuff, and they're really awesome as well. Both bands do a good number of shows, often at frat dance parties. Student musicians/singers also perform in Lone Pine Tavern all the time, I think pretty much every night, so you can chill their over milk shakes and listen to that also. And the College gets great bands to come to campus; this year Dashboard Confessionals had a concert for Dartmouth students, and bands like The Wrens and Mates of States also came, and Dartmouth students could see them for free. I can't rememer all the music things that went on, maybe some other student can help me out.

The Programming Board usually has one major concert in Leede Arena each quarter. Major is a relative term though -- like this spring we had Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Not very well-known but probably one of the better Leede concerts I've been to actually. As far as an indie rock scene though... there really isn't any. Like, it's cool that they're trying but sorry, I just find most of the campus bands to be blah... Closest place with a decent music scene is probably Burlington, about an hour & a half away.

Are there any music stores in or around Hanover? Place to get some guitar strings, cables, whatever's neccessary?

i remember seeing that Dashboard came earlier this year because they turned down Wilco (why?).

lol they got dashboard confessional over wilco?

Wow... that's possibly the biggest crime ever committed against humanity. Wilco rocks my socks.

haha seriously.

This is not the first time they dumped Wilco, either. About two years ago they also turned them down in favor of Medeski Martin & Wood.

There's a store called Hanover Strings that I'd guess would have music stuff... never been there though.
