i’m a junior trying to narrow down my list of colleges. i’m a musician and would love to get involved in the music scene at whatever college i end up at… what i’d like to know is how active the scene is at each campus. I assume that berkeley, la, and san diego, because they’re in big cities, will have great music scenes. but what about the others? thanks

LA and Berkeley are the only ones that I would say have the best music scenes. I mean, anywhere you go you'll find a music scene, but the bay area and los angeles have some of the best music scenes in the country. i live 5 minutes away from UC Berkeley and the music scene in the berkeley/oakland area is great. lots of shows all the time, all types of music (punk pop, emo, screamo, hardcore, whatever). it's a good time always

okay, well i guess i'm not necessarily looking for the best scene in the country, i just wanna know which campuses are located in areas where it's reasonably easy to meet other musicians, get gigs, get noticed, get fans, etc. etc. it doesn't necessarily have to be MUSIC CENTRAL, just a decent scene. I figure a place like Davis, for example, is too far in the middle of nowhere to fit this description, but I have no idea when it comes to the SoCal campuses. are you saying that all the campuses besides LA and Berkeley are pretty bad? if so... aiiite... if not... uhm... yea...

"i just wanna know which campuses are located in areas where it's reasonably easy to meet other musicians, get gigs, get noticed, get fans"

Los Angeles... especially UCLA since its in West LA. Very easy to meet other musicians. However, I do note that although there's a lot of opportunities to get gigs and get noticed, your competition also happens to be very stiff! If you're a music major, then perhaps you can get the insider track to all this. Being a freelancer in Los Angeles is tough but do-able.

what you're saying about a place where you can get noticed and build a fan-base is EXACTLY what berkeley is. if that's what you want then berkeley is your EXACT fit. there are TONS AND TONS of local bands in teh area, and it is fairly easy to get a fan-base and play at one of the many local venues. also, there are 2 large record stores on telegraph avenue (the main street for the college) that sell tons of local groups' cds
