Music Scene at Pitt

I'm very into music- singer/songwriter, piano, acoustic guitar. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me more of what the music scene at Pitt is like. I don't mean for orchestras or musicals (I know there is a theater near the city for things like that), but for people like me who are part of the singer/songwriter genre. I'm very interested in being able to perform around the area but have heard that the city shuts down at about 5.

So what I'm asking:
Are there other places in the surrounding Pitt area that have live music performances fairly regularly? Or does anyone know about performance opportunities around the area in general? What about music clubs that Pitt has to offer? Any info would be great! Thanks!

I know Pittsburgh has an active folk music scene if you like that:

There are many clubs with live music. Pghcitypaper.com has a good events listing. Many area pubs have open mic nights too. Not sure there is a Pitt club (lots of choral, yes) but you can always start one.

A lot of coffee shops and bars have live music nights. Unfortunately for your first couple of years your choices may be limited as some of them really only cater to the +21 crowd due to serving alcohol. However, Pitt itself has a LOT of open mic nights where many people come out to perform solo or with their bands.

Check SORC clubs (link: https://pitt-community.symplicity.com/index.php?s=student_group&au=&ck=</a>) for something that might interest you. And if nothing does, you can always start your own.
