What's the music scene like at Rutgers? Lots of musicians / local bands on campus? I play bass and have played in 3 somewhat-serious bands back home in MD. I like punk, pop-punk, hardcore and ska.... what kinda music scene exists on/around campus? Any cool music stores/venues around?

Ill answer this to the best of my ability because when comes to underground bands and the whole music scene, I really dont know much about it, haha.

Well, apparently Ive heard from a friend that the underground music scene is great here – especially punk rock at local bars and basements. LOTS of local bands! Sometimes the radio station(s) here on campus (The Core; WRSU) have local bands on.

In terms of music venues, the best one I can think of is Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ which is about 20-25 minutes away from New Brunswick by car. You also have the option of taking the 818 bus in New Brunswick and from there take a cab to the venue. I dont know any specific bands you are into (so I hope I dont offend you if I list some of the acts that have performed there): Streetlight Manifesto (a couple of kids I know went to the show a month or two ago), Badfish, Say Anything, Reel Big Fish, NOFX, Danzig, Bad Religion just to name a few.

Also realize that you are an-hour train ride away from New York City and Philadelphia if you want a bit more options. Dont know how much it costs to go to Philadelphia, but a round-trip ticket to New York is around $17-18.

Hope that somewhat helps =)
