Current Vandy Students: I am really into music (concerts) so I wanted to know about the music scene at Vandy. Do a lot of different kinds of musicians come through Nashville/Vandy? Does Vandy itself get quite a few bands? I would imagine that there are student bands at Vandy...

I'm not all that into country, so I was wondering what else there is and if there are other genres, how often do they come to play?

Well, I'm a freshman at Vanderbilt this year, but I'm also from the Nashville area. Good bands do come through Nashville, but it's not as often as neighboring Atlanta, simply because Nashville isn't a very big city. Usually the summertime brings the best music, but even that is starting to die out (2 music festivals that have been going on for years were cancelled last year - one was a one weekend event with about 40-50 musical acts and the other was concerts one night a week all summer long). "Good" music is sort of like the diamond in the rough...you have to see past the country and western bars to find a better variety of music. It does exist though...I saw Imogen Heap about a month ago, and Red Hot Chili Peppers are going to be here in January.

So far this year we've had Coolio and Ludacris. Every year, the big thing is Rites of Spring, which is two days of nonstop music (usually about 20 bands/performers maybe?). Those can range anywhere from country to rap. I'm not sure about in the city itself.

Lots of punk/indie bands play around Elliston Place (three blocks from campus). The school brings alot of alternative bands, especially during Rites of Spring.
