music scholarships for non-majors??

Hi, I know nothing about this part of the process but figured you all would be able to help. My D, a Junior, plays mallet percussion in her HS orchestra. She loves it wants to continue in college though not as a major. Her band director is encouraging her to submit an audition tape to the schools on her list.

She is not considering any of the schools with the super-competitive music programs but if there is non-major music money to be had at the schools to which she is admitted we would like to know the timetable and procedure for contacting the schools. Thanks

It's very school specific, and the info is usually found within the (music) school or department webpages, or in the general scholarship criteria normally outlined in the admission or financial aid, the undergrad or department specific handbook webpages.

A lot depends on the program, the make-up of the ensembles, department funding, and an area's particular needs. There's no hard and fast answer.

If you can't get the info from each school's online materials, call the music department directly. Submission material requirements should also be addressed, as they vary by school.

A link to a prior thread, with some awards. <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/336764-master-list-scholarships-merit-aid.html?highlight=scholarships%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/336764-master-list-scholarships-merit-aid.html?highlight=scholarships</a> Some shown are for non majors.

edit: there are a couple of active posters whose students are non-majors and are receiving music specific scholarships. I'm sure they'll chime in.

My D auditioned as a non-major, even though she ended up enrolling as a major. Furman, Miami U (where she is), and St. Olaf all gave her money as a non-major. Each had a different time-table and procedure. For example, at Furman and Miami, she had to audition live. St. Olaf required a CD, and then followed up with an invitation to audition live. (Conflict with All State meant she auditioned via DVD.) I think all three may have had a separate application portion that was due either with or before the regular application. All also required music teacher recs; I think Miami required 3, the others either one or two.

As Violadad says, all the info is on their websites. In these cases, all was on the music department pages.

DD is a non-major. She receives a small scholarship for participating in her school's orchestra. She contacted all of the schools...contacting the orchestra director, the oboe teacher, and the head of the music department to get info. She also had oboe lessons at her top two choice schools. I would suggest that you contact each school's music department. We found that THEY had the info...admissions did not.

Thanks all!!!

While searching for various opportunities for DD last year, here are some we've found:

Leonard Bernstein Scholarship

[Scholarships

Swarthmore</a> Music Department: Overview](<a href="http://www.lclark.edu/dept/music/scholarships.html%5DScholarships%5B/url">http://www.lclark.edu/dept/music/scholarships.html)</p>

There might be more. ;)

UChicago has some scholarship-type awards set up for students (music majors and non-majors alike; although there are no performance majors at all). The university will pay for students' private lessons (awards are based on auditions). There is also a fund set up to give up to $1500 to students for summer music projects, and this fund called the Wadmund (spelling?) fund that also helps pay for performance-related endeavors.

myau, the LB scholarship to which you have linked, is specifically for chamber music. They evidently award between three to five of these per year, depending on the ensemble type that they are planning (trio, quartet, quintet). The number awarded is not specified on the website.

Both Skidmore and Davidson have scholarship awards for musicians, and I'm not sure you can even BE a music major at either place. These scholarships are awarded to students of any major. The student applies, and the scholarships are actually awarded based on an audition/program weekend the finalists are invited to attend.

Davidson was one of the schools we investigated, and Thumper is right, they have scholarships. They do have a music major as well. The scholarship auditions are held in April, which I found irritating, because then you wouldn't have your total financial picture until very late in the game.

(And totally off the subject, but Thumper - I know you're named after a dead dog - but I saw your name on this thread, right beneath the percussion thread, and got a whole new connotation. :) )
