Music scholarships?

Hi guys,

I was wondering about schools that offer scholarships to non-music majors to perform in their major ensembles. I play the viola (All-State level and was just accepted to the Boston Youth Symphony senior orchestra), and I know violists tend to be in high demand. (I'm also somewhere in the top 10% of my class at a competitive suburban high school, scored 2100 on the SAT as a sophomore, Asian-American) Are there schools that people have experience with that offer scholarships just for being in the orchestra, and if so, how much?

Thanks a lot for your input. :)

Skidmore has an auditioned (and competitive) scholarship for musicians. So does Davidson. You’d need to contact the schools directly to find out what they offer. DD, not a music major, gets free lessons on her instruments and a small scholarship per year as long as she plays in the university orchestra. Since that was a criteria for her college search, she has done so for the last three years and will continue until she graduates. The free lessons alone save us several thousand dollars a year (if we had to pay for private lessons).

If you are a Wisconsin Resident, The School of Music at UW Madison and Milwaukee offer 10 full tuition scholarships each year through the Summer Music Clinic. The only requirement is that you participate in the ensemble in your instrument. So, you don’t have to be a music major.

However, the competition is only open to Juniors in High School, and it is going on this week. 25% of the competition is based upon performing scales. This is where most of the students loose points. In fact, last year, one of the winners was a violist who was not seated very high in the orchestra. So, as long as your are decent, if you know your scales backwards and forwards, you have a good chance.

BTW: You might want to ask the question on the Music forum.

That’s interesting!!

Thanks for all the replies. I’ll check out Skidmore (it’s closer to home) and though I’m not a WI resident, I appreciate the tip!
