Music Schools Within State Colleges

Hi all, I’m a junior in high school and I play piano and I hate to do this but I need to ask y’all a noob question:
So say you trying to apply to smtd… do you need to apply and get accepted to both UM and smtd? If yes what happens if you get accepted by one but not the other?
The thing is my grade are kinda bad so I’m a lil scared my safe school, Madison, will reject me lol
Sorry for the noob question, I’m new to this whole music college thing. Ofc I will ask my teachers soon, but if y’all can share your experieces/explain how it works that will be much appreciated, so I won’t have to ask any stupid questions irl.

It completely depends on the school how they treat the two sides of admissions. For Michigan, during an info session I did at SMTD, I was told you were expected to have a 3.0 GPA and a 24 ACT or 1180 SAT. These standards are much lower than if you were applying to say, LSA.

Would you mind sharing your stats with us?

@Natangx— at some schools it is much more about the audition than grades. Look at the admissions page or use Prepscholar (search for school name and act or sat to get to the right page) to see the average stats for regular admissions.

Depending on the school, you may need just a minimum and can rely on your audition for the rest; if a selective school, you’ll need higher stats.
