Where are the recognized leaders in Music Therapy in the US? My D is looking at the 4 in Canada, but wants to be open to possibilities. Potentially be able to go to Wales for international IB and put in 2 years of MT training at the same time. Suggestions please.

I don’t know about leaders, but some schools which have stood out to me in my search for an equivalency program are Florida State University, Radford University, and Appalachian State University. FSU seems to have diverse opportunities for internships in particular.

Nazareth College in Rochester,NY, is known to have an excellent Music Therapy program- they even have their own lab/teaching facility right on campus. I can’t figure out the connection you were trying to make with the IB( that’s a high school degree here) and Wales. I’m not sure that training for several years in another country would be usable for certification here…

The IB program is through the United World College schools. It is a $80,000 full ride scholarship for 2 years, and their students are heavily recruited for colleges worldwide.
Their program offers a IB, plus a focus on service to the community. One of the services is in music therapy. My D wants a career in music, but something more reliable than musical theatre. There is a huge MT group on CC, but little on Musical Therapy. As a Canadian, schools at home are a strong first choice. With only 4-5 nation wide, she wants to have the option and ability to get the best training possible, whatever her degree.

I don’t know much about music therapy programs, but I believe Montclair State College in NJ has a good program.

Duquesne University in Pittsburgh has a good Music Therapy program.

So far we are impressed with Temple and Shenandoah. Nazareth looked very good as well.
We are trying to find schools with both Music Therapy and Musical Theatre options.
Any one with any experience or insight into any of the programs mentioned in this thread?

Montclair State allows Musical Theatre minor with Music Therapy major. Hmmmm.

Jackfamily2: Check out Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Oh. Great scholarships both for music and academics. They have a great rep for Music Theatre and also for Music Therapy. Check with admissions re a double major or minor in both. I know they are flexible about doubling in music and any outside major. Another nice aspect of BW is that you can schedule an early audition in November and you’ll hear by early December. Plus, they had the very nicest and friendliest of auditon days son went through when he auditioned 2 years ago. It’s always a confidence booster if you get an early acceptance. The Music Theatre and vocal performance majors are very competitive with a 20% acceptance rate per BW literature. Good luck with your search.

The University of Evansville (Indiana) offers a music therapy degree and has a first-rate theater program as well. Although they don’t have a separate track for musical theater, they do stage musicals. Both music and theater programs are competitive in terms of admissions, and both majors appear to be rigorous and demanding, so I don’t know if a double major is realistic, but they do offer a BS option that might give your D some flexibility. My son interviewed there recently for theater performance, and we were very impressed with the quality and overall environment of the school. Might be worth a look for your family!

FSU has a great music therapy program and also a top-notch musical theatre program. I’m not sure how easy it is to do both…but I know both programs are excellent. Another very good music therapy school is Western Michigan University. I got my master’s there and had considered going into music therapy and so I observed quite a bit. Although I ended up sticking with music ed, I was very impressed with their program. And they have a musical theatre program too.

Temple has a really good music therapy program. During my audition I met a senior from China in music therapy and she loved it.

I know Arizona State has a great music therapy program! I’ve heard most students find success in job placement, that the program thoroughly prepares, and that it provides you ample experience.
