Music Therapy

My son plays guitar and sings, but has had no formal training. He would like to pursue a major in Music Therapy, but it looks like he would have to major in music to accomplish that. He is an amazing singer and sings at local venues around town (just started doing this and he is 17) and has taught himself the guitar, but he is by no means a polished musician with years of training. Any advice on what type of majors he can pursue that wouldn't require auditions but that he can still incorporate his love and passion for singing and playing guitar---doesn't want to teach? He loves working with children and people with special needs and we thought music therapy would be perfect, but don't think he can get into a music conservatory. Are we looking at this right? Any help or suggestions you have would be great. Thank you!

I do not think that avoiding majoring in music is a good idea. If music therapy is something he is interested in, go for it! There are many American schools that do not require an audition in order to be a music major. Many do however, require that if you wish to be in their band that you audition, but you do not have to be in their band in order to be a music major. By already knowing how to sing and play guitar your son is already half way there :)
