Music!

I guess so. Guess it doesn’ tmatter what a true fan starts as, long as they end up a true fan. Lord knows I listened to some crappy stuff before discovering real metal.

I listen to a lot of foreign metal like Be’lakor, Persefone, and Sonata Arctica. I also totally love classical music like Mozart and some soundtrack type stuff. Trance is also pretty high up on my music list. I’m super picky with pop music and only listen to like Alizee or Asian pop

I’m more into the prog-metal side of things. Between the Buried and Me, Animals as Leaders, Dream Theater, Periphery, Opeth, Mastodon, Meshuggah, Gojira…

Okay so the last two aren’t super super progressive but you get the idea. I’ve also got respect for some of the older stuff like Hendrix, (some) Rolling Stones, U2, R.E.M.

Love Dream Theater and as said earlier I’m really getting into Mastodon. I’m hoping DT’s new album will be good. The last one was pretty nice but not their best IMO.

I listen to mostly Gothic & Metal. Lots of European/German bands like ASP, Samsas Traum etc., nobody has ever heard of. For some strange reason I also really like Musicals, even though it clashes horribly with the other music I listen to.

Eminem is God. I like old school rap, hip-hop, some bubblegum pop too. Everything except nothing too country.

I also loveeee Mexican music. My roots

Dream Theater is like the Harvard of metal, pretentious and overrated.

Isn’t all prog-rock a little on the pretentious side? Either way, Dream Theater is most definitely not overrated. I don’t like a lot of their stuff - to be honest, I can’t stand the vocals, so I prefer Liquid Tension Experiment (basically, DT minus the vocals) instead - but there’s no doubt the guys can play.

Anyway, may as well post what I’m into… (favorites in bold)

“Modern” Rock - Tool, Puscifer, Radiohead, Alice In Chains, Radio Moscow, The Black Keys, The Black Angels, Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M, The Stone Roses, Blind Melon, Rage Against the Machine, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, The Desert Sessions, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures, Kyuss, Nine Inch Nails, The Flaming Lips, Porcupine Tree, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Colour Haze, Blues Traveler, The Mars Volta

Classic Rock - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, Captain Beefheart, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Ten Years After, Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, CSN&Y, Traffic, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Talking Heads, The Doors, The Kinks, Blue Cheer, Van Morrison, The Velvet Underground, Janis Joplin, Canned Heat, Leonard Cohen, The Eagles, Edgar Winter, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac (w/ Peter Green), Santana, Allman Brothers, Pentagram, Neu!

Blues/Jazz - Miles Davis, Howlin’ Wolf, BB King, Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Buddy Guy, Weather Report, lots of local stuff

Classical/Orchestral - Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Braums, Satie, Clint Mansell

Tom Waits - Tom Waits

Basically, anything but pop, country, dub-step, rap/hip-hop, etc.

I like DT, I think it’s just cool to hate on them. If you don’t like 'em, great, no need to act all cool because you think they’re pretentious or whatever.

Anyway, death metal rules. Mainly the more melodic stuff. So energetic and cathartic. Bad day? Dime those speakers and let it blast. And if you’re a musician? Learn to play it, you’ll never have trouble dealing with stress or anger again.

If you need somewhere to start I suggest Strapping Young Lad’s “The New Black.”
