Hey all!
I am a bassoonist and I was wondering what opportunities ND has in the music department and what sorts of auditions would be required. I don't intend to major in music, I just want to play in an orchestra and/or band (if orchestra is impossible) in college.

ahem* notre dame marching band... im not sure if they have spots for bassoons but that would be an obvious suspect. there are also alot of ensembles and orchestras. I believe I saw a list while on campus, and there were quite a few music groups.

Marching with a bassoon? Are you insane?

j/k

Seriously, though, as much fun as I think marching band would be, just moving a bassoon is tedious. In order for the thing to be played, it has to attached to a strap on which you sit. I don't see any feasibility in an option that demands constant movement.

I really want to be in an orchestra. I have been in a prestigious central ohio student orchestra for several years and I want to keep on going with that kind of experience.

Nonmarching band is fine, but the music tends to lack the subtlety that only an orchestra can express.

The big thing is specifics. No idea where to find those.

I know there are several different orchestral and other things such as hockey band and concert bands which members of the Marching band seem to get involved with in the non-football season. Best bet would be to go the ND website and look up the emails for members of the music dept and email them directly.
