Musical Instrument Storage for Non-Music Major

Hi All! Is there anyone out there that is a non-music major that plays in the Wind Ensemble, AUO, Kiltie Band, etc.? If so, does CMU have storage lockers available for those of you who play larger instruments (tuba, euphonium, etc.)? If not, do you keep your instrument in your dorm room? Are dorm rooms fairly secure? My incoming freshman son is planning to bring his euphonium with him to school, but he isn't sure where the best place to keep it will be. He emailed the music department and was told, understandably, that he would have to wait until the fall semester begins to find out about instrument locker availability. Looks like son will be in Scobell, FWIW. Any advice or recommedations? Thanks a bunch!

Scobell is pretty tiny, though if the rooms are still how they were when I was there all the beds are lofted with desks taking up the entire space beneath them. As long as it can fit under the desk there should be room to store it there. A dorm room is only as secure as the students let it be. Close your door (it auto-locks) when you leave and theft is non-existant.

Thanks for the input, RacinReaver. I’m really hoping he can score an instrument locker for his euph, but I know chances are probably slim. He wants to bring his guitar along too - hopefully there will be room in the dorm for that as well. I see from some of your other posts that you spent some time in Scobell - can you tell me, are the closets roomy enough that he might be able to stand a guitar case up in one in the event he has his other instrument under his desk? Can you tell me how the rooms in Scobell compare size-wise to the rooms in Stever? I got to see a room in Stever at Admitted Students day, so that might give me an idea of how small we are talking here. I’ve seen some videos of Scobell rooms on Youtube and they do look tiny, but sometimes it’s hard to tell looking at a video… Thanks again!

I think Stever is pretty much the same size as Scobell. The main difference is it has AC and is a much newer dorm (they had just built it my freshman year). Scobell was finishing up a major renovation at that time, though, so it was actually pretty nice. I’m thinking back pretty hard here, I think our closets didn’t have any sort of doors on them (maybe curtains?), so sticking a guitar in there shouldn’t be a problem. It just might have to hide behind some hanging shirts.
