Ithaca College in NY state has a BFA in Musical Theatre with no dance requirement as part of their audition for entrance into their program. They do offer dance in their MT curriculum. It is a hugely competitive program; I believe they took 10 in this year’s incoming freshman class.

Don’t give up on schools which have dance as part of the audition. My D had very limited dance also. She studied ballet with a private instructor for about 6-7 months (and I do recommend getting as much ballet as you can this year), and has had little bits of “musical theater dance”. She got accepted at several schools which had dance auditions, including all 3 schools which required 1 minute choreographed individual dance auditions. While there are many schools which place heavy emphasis on dance ability going in, many of them look for potential in dance if the voice and acting components are good.

I have heard there are some schools that place a lot of emphasis on dance auditions and some that don’t even have a dance audition. Most of what I see or hear from those that have gone through the process is that many schools look for your ability to move and develop dance skills. The idea of taking ballet before auditions is a good one suggested by many MT program directors here; my daughter does a lot of tap and music theater/show choir dance but is polishing up her ballet skills a bit before auditions.

I think you have to keep in mind what the purpose of an MT education is; presumably to prepre the student for an MT career. Dance will be an important part of that, so it would seem to me you want to make sure you get a good dance education wherever you go. I know my daughter specifically is applying to places where there is a strong dance part of the curriculum precisely to be sure she gets that education. At a recent seminar I attended, a guy who graduated from a local HS and is a Broadway star told the kids and parents you need to have as many tools in your toolbox as you can; i.e. have voice, acting and dance abilities. If you don’t do dance then basically you are a singer/actor, and that will limit your professional opportunities to an extent.

NYU–BM degree in vocal performance (Musical theatre major)

This program is in Steinhardt, not Tisch as it is a music degree. The program itself has a dance requirement, but there is no dance audition. The good part is that if one wants to really improve one’s dance ability outside of the class offerings through the program, there are many outside dance classes to be had on a professional level throughout the city. It is an excellent program with wonderful voice instructors.
