Musical Theater degrees?!

I would greatly appreciate any and all help in the search for musical theater degrees. My daughter is a junior in high school, with a love and passion for the theater. (Her favorite place to be is on stage performing.) She is at the top of her class, very involved in music since a young age. We are blessed to be at a high school very strong in the performing arts. What we have researched is overwhelming. We live in the northeastern US and are aware of several colleges with MT degrees. (For example: Ithaca, Emerson, Boston Conservatory, Syracuse, NYU, Univ. of Cin., Carn. Mellon, U of Arts in Philly, Shenendoah...) I would like to here about some of the programs, what ones are recommended or not, and why! Some advice I have seen is to have a fall back school! How can you have a fall back school in this degree???!!!! Thank you for any help!

I have heard good things about Syracuse and Carnegie Mellon from someone who is knowledgeable about such things (which I am not). This person is very talented, is applying to these schools on the advice of her father who is an admissions director at a large university. There are also departments at U of Oklahoma, Penn State, U Michigan, UCLA, U Arizona (but I can't really evaluate them). In western NY, Ithaca College is well respected for their music programs. I have seen some faculty from Ithaca Coll perform in Ithaca summer musical theater (Hangar Theater) and they were excellent as performers. This isn't very authoritative info but I thought I'd share it with you.

BTW There is a new separate board on CC for Musical Theater. Check it out.

Here is the link to the MT forum here at CC:

Alternatively, you can go back to the Discussion page, look for the heading College Majors, and look for the sub-heading Musical Theatre.

The discussion about all things involving college MT has been ongoing for over 2 years. You will be able to find an incredible amount of information about many MT programs, how to audition, and how to develop an alternate plan if your child's audiitons don't pan out.
