Musical Theatre and Math

My D is interested in a school that will allow her to persue Musical Theatre and Math, both as majors. Does anyone have any suggestions on schools that will foster both of these areas.

Paimom, you might want to have a look at the Musical Theatre forum here on CC. Two BFA schools that come to mind that allow for double majors of MT and another subject are NYU and UMichigan. You can find more information in the MT forum and likely will hear about several other BA options.

I agree to post on the MT forum, under college majors. The problem with BFA programs is that they often do not allow enought flexibility to double major. Some students decide to pursue a BA which often gives more options for double majors/minors. Both U Mich and NYU are extremely competitive, audition based programs with acceptance rates in the single digits. Good luck as you pursue information on such an exciting, but difficult journey.

If the goal is simply to pursue both subjects, there are ways to do that. Making them both majors complicates the search. Are the two subjects equally compelling to this student?

Sometimes the student wants a theater or arts major, and the parent agrees to it on condition that there’s a second pursuit that promises a more dependable employment pathway after college. I understand that, but I’m not sure the way to resolve these things is to demand equal time with two majors during college.

Perhaps it’s possible to do this as a Major and a Minor. A question to ask is this: after satisfying all the departmental requirements of each major, is there enough time outside of those two subjects for all other coursework, in order to get the undergraduate education that serves as a lifelong foundation? Look especially for what is expected of the major in senior year. Sometimes capstone projects or thesis work is so demanding; you want to be sure you can satisfy both bosses.

My son has a MT degree with his academic concentration in math. But he also entered with second semester sophomore standing and AP calculus credits. He had a lot of room for courses. And needed every bit of it.

The OP reposted this in the MT forum. A mod may want to combine the threads.
