Musical Theatre BFAs and minoring?

Hi, CC MT board! I just have a question about these colleges with MT BFAs and whether they allow minors, because the BFA MT track is so time-consuming. I'm planning on a English/Creative Writing minor.

Carnegie Mellon
Belmont
Elon
Emerson
Ithaca
Samford

Thanks! :)

I specifically remember that question coming up at CMU, and them saying it wasn’t doable (at least not if you want to graduate in 4 years) b/c the curriculum is very linear.

It is allowed at Elon, but you have to plan your schedule carefully to get everything done. You also have to be prepared to take a summer course, if needed. Common minors are dance, business and communications. Sometimes you will find a class that knocks out two requirements, like principle of economics can both fill a gen ed requirement AND is required for a business minor.

You can do it at Rider with careful planning. Helps if you come in with some AP/IB credits and/or you pass out of a few things in testing.

If you would consider a BA, Muhlenberg is a good school to look at (and visit). It is audition for scholarship only and has wonderful facilities and faculty.

Bumping this because I’d like to hear more about places where it is possible to get a BFA in MT as well as a minor ing a non performance area? (ex. business/communications)

Not a BFA, but Northwestern is a great place to get solid professional MT training and complete a double major in a non-performance field in 4 years.

I believe James Madison @KatMT‌ ? And I think Ball State @jeffandann‌ ? Ohio Northern —

Yep. It is very possible to minor at with the MT program at James Madison. Double majoring is more difficult, but not impossible, particularly if a student enters with AP, IB, dual enrollment credit, and/or takes a few summer courses.

James Madison is an auditioned BA program. Students in the program balance the significant professional training and performance commitments and opportunities, with a fairly rigorous academics.

Minoring is possible - and encouraged - at IU.

It is not possible to get a BFA in MT and a minor in anything else at Ithaca. The BFA in MT is actually considered a double major of Theatre and Voice, with a minor in dance. There is no room for any other classes.

Not sure about Ball State. Based on my D’s schedule it would be very difficult to minor

Minoring at BW seemed doable. Some minors seemed easier to accomplish… For example a dance minor is just 4 addl dance classes. The current MT dad who spoke to us at the audition said his daughter will have an education minor.
