Musical Theatre College Auditions 2014!

Hello!
I am currently prepping for my college auditions in 2014! I JUST picked my monolgues yesterday with my audition coach and I was wondering....
As far as songs go!!
I am a singer above an actress or dancer in skill level, and I really want to make an impression by my songs. Any examples of uptempos, ballads, and pre-1960s songs that demonstrate a strong mix or belt for girls who are in the soprano belt category? Also a more RECENT list of overdone songs?
Thank you a million times!!

Hi and welcome to this forum.

I don’t think you will get a lot of song suggestions because your question is a very big one and we don’t know your type, voice, style, range, strengths, etc. It seems to me that if you are lucky enough to be working with an audition coach, wouldn’t he or she be suggesting songs well suited for you?

There are lots of lists online of songs for particular vocal ranges.

Also, if there is a singer/actor whose voice type is similar to yours, look through their repertoire.

While you should avoid the MOST overdone songs, there is no need to seek a truly unique song and it is OK if others sing your song too.

Hello kirastone! I am currently a junior musical theatre major at Ball State University and remember this audition experience very well. I was very concerned about not singing overdone songs and having songs sit PERFECTLY in my voice. But what I discovered was all of the schools I auditioned for were looking to see ME up on that stage. Songs that I connected to personally, the type of songs and material I loved to perform, why I wanted to perform, the joy I got from performing, and they wanted to see if I connected to the words I was singing about more than the notes. And all of things can only be accomplished you feel connected to your material and really feel like you understand what you are singing about and why. So my biggest piece of advice is find musical pieces that make you feel amazing on that stage and songs that you can perform with honestly, and passion!

P.S. I WOULD shy away from singing Stephen Sondheim songs, not all of them, just because they can be hard for the pianist to play, as well as some Jason Robert Brown and Adam Guettel. So make sure that the accompaniment to your songs isn’t too complicated so you feel comfortable with a new pianist. If you feel you can perform a song with all your heart and gusto, and if someone or lots of other people sing your song who cares? Make yours the most interesting (:

Check school websites and be absolutely sure you follow their guidelines on non-acceptable songs.
