Musical Theatre College Search

My daughter is a college freshman and wants to transfer to a college with a MT program. She applied as a transfer to NYU/Tisch among others this year and was rejected by all. Does anyone know of "transfer friendly" MT programs out there that may have less stringent acceptance policies and less competitive acceptance rates? She does possess talent, but is not as well trained in MT as many of her contemporaries. She pursued other interests in high school so is a little behind in training. She has a decent GPA, around 3.5. I have never posted on here before so not sure what else to say except that any input would appreciated. She wants to give it a go again next year for Fall 2011 and she needs some direction.

I highly recommend that you visit College Confidential’s Musical Theater Major Forum. Link below.

Spend a few days reading the huge amount of information there. As well, use CC’s Search Function to search thread topics on the MT forum regarding transfers.

Then, start some specific discussions there and many will help you.

I will comment that BFA in MT programs are HIGHLY competitive (most have acceptance rates between 2-9%). In fact, the odds are even tougher than that for transfers. Your daughter may wish to consider some non-audition BA in MT programs as well as BFA ones, and also beef up her training in the meantime.

Yes I have been thinking that as well. Can you direct me toward some non audition schools to look at? Also, any colleges offering MT training in the summer? Thanks!

everymom- I encourage you to go over to the MT forum and do some searches on both non audition schools and summer MT programs and you will find a lot of info out there.

I answered you over there and did a search for you over there. These topics come up frequently and so rather than write out all the responses over and over again, the best thing to do is to read all existing threads on each of those topics and then ask further questions.

By the way, at the top of the MT forum, is a pinned thread of all colleges that offer MT (the so called Big List of MT Colleges) and the list on the thread indicates which college programs are non-audition. There is an other pinned thread of summer MT programs, many of which are on college campuses, although not all are open to students already in college (some are). It is on the late side to apply for summer programs.
